New SSD install.

I've installed Win 7 on a new 850 EVO 120GB, I'm aware of a few tweaks and changes that need to be made but not sure specifically which.

1. Is there a firmware upgrade I need to do?

2. Is it worth getting Samsung Magician?

3. What is TRIM?

And anything else that needs doing, but boot speeds atm are down from 53 seconds to 20 which is OK by me at least, thanks!

1 - I have the Samsung 250GB 850 Evo and no firmware to upgrade too.

2 - get the software (4.6 from their website) as this keeps the firmware up to date on the SSD when they release a new one and has OS optimisation sections etc

if there is nothing worth keeping on the OS and can be re installed easily you may want to disable system restore, I have on mine but that is because there is nothing on my OS drive that isn't replaced when windows is installed or software and saves space!

make sure you disable disk defragmenter, this can be done by going to start, all programs, accessories, system tools and then disk defragmenter.

once in there click on configure schedule and remove the tick next to "run on schedule (recommended)" and press ok. windows 7 has this enabled by default and SSDs don't need it

the other thing is to lower down the page file.

go to start and right click on my computer and go to properties.

up the top left click on advance system properties and then click on the settings button under the advance tab.

on the next screen click on the advance tab again and then click on the change button under virtual memory.

by default its set to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" un tick this box and then click on custom size.

I have my initial size set to 1024mb (1GB) and maximum size set to 2048 (2GB) I can play games for hours and have no issues with anything and I have 6GB of ram (most people have 8GB these days)

this will save on SSD space as well.

once all the windows updates are installed run disk clean up as well as I take it your windows 7 ISO is a SP1 version which will result in about 230 odd windows updates.

once in disk clean up make sure Windows Update Cleanup is ticked, this may save more space

Yeah It's SP1. Currently formatting my old HDD. Never touched the page file, what does it do? I have 8GB RAM.

Edit: Been getting slow boot times with the SSD and HDD installed.

SSD is on SAT3, same as the HDD. 389MB/s read and 354MB/s write speed. ACHI and TRIM are on. I'll try booting just with the SSD in and see what happens.

Edit2: Scratch the above, I got it working. Reseated the SATA data cable. Boot in around 10 seconds!
