New SSD on windows 7

Hi all,

I think this may be a stupid question but is there anything I need to do in windows 7 to make it okay for SSDs? I know TRIM is built in but does it detect the SSD automatically or do I need to tell it that a given disk is an ssd?

Hi,

I installed Win 7 on my Crucial SSD over the weekend and it was no drama whatsoever! Just set your PC to boot from your CD/DVD and the installer found my SSD and hey presto! Some people have reported that sometimes Win 7 can be fussy about what SATA port your SSD is connected to, but thankfully I had no problems.

Windows 7 was coded to support TRIM so it will enable it and send commands to the SSD's controller when files are deleted if an SSD is detected as well as disable various services that aren't needed but would otherwise run on the SSD such as Superfetch and Disk Defragmentation. You shouldn't need to manually change anything with Windows 7, it is all automatic.

In order for TRIM to actually function though the SSD's firmware itself needs to support it so you'll need to check which firmware your drive has and whether it has TRIM built in. You can usually find out by going to the drive manufacturer's website and checking the support page.

Some SSDs such as the Cruical M225 now have TRIM and garbage collection built into their latest firmwares (v1916). This allows GC to run when the drive is idle if TRIM is not working, i.e. for RAID setups as currently TRIM is only supported for IDE and AHCI.

Hi,

Do the Firmware FIRST - it was easy and painless using the imaged boot cd that was on the Crucial Website (assuming you have an M225 of course!). There is another thread about that on here.

I meant later today

. No not crucial. I have an OCZ vertex.

Do you have to do the firmware before putting anything on it? I already have my OS on there.
