New SSD round up

Why does the round up not include any of the brands we're familiar with / able to buy locally? Seems an odd choice of drives :confused:

Very odd review: "We found 6 new drives - they're rubbish - but we'll go through the motions anyway because... we're bored..." ???

Yeah, seems a bit silly to do the test before the new Vertex generation of drives arrive. Also, I may have missed it, but did they talk about the random write stuttering under real world conditions at all? This is the real big issue for SSD's, sustained transfer and IOPS are secondary concerns.

Sounds spookily like my sex life ;)

{sorry mods just a little banter plz don't bar me}

HAHA, for some odd reason i know the feeling too

Anyway! yeah that article was pants, tomshardware isnt too hot at the moment (i was also linked to an artical about some guy who got a macbook from being a massive windows fan who then forgot to actually tell us anything about his use of the macbook and just compaired specs for 25 pages...)

Because tomshardware is the worst hardware review site on the internet? Most people and makers know this so wont give them review samples I expect :p

OCZ Apex Series review, also some benches over on the OCZ forum...

Actually the most interesting thing I found in that review was that the sizes of 60gb instead of 64gb were due to the new jmicron controller. Meaning we can then assume anything that uses the newer (slightly lower) capacity levels are using the new controller... such as the Solid series.

Well the size difference is due to the reserved space for wear levelling - in addition this can be used to distribute writes efficiently if a particular chip is is free and has space.

A neat trick but requires a considerable amount of page/block mapping to be available in a non-volatile location.

Toms wont get there cash for the review from intel if they review it against drives that can compete.

Good review, shame about the products.

I personally think tom's is fairly good. At least it has a good all round review of several products.

Tom's used to be good. Then it was taken over.. you can still go to the UK section and read all the comments by the diehard fans complaining about how rubbish it is now. They don't find someplace better, they just complain about it :D
