Hi,

I just received my new SSD today, got it all up and installed on straight away. It was fast but not by as much as i was expecting, i realised after reading in posts that AHCI had to be set so i've used the registry change and changed in bios but it is still not that brilliant.

I have it connected to a Gigabyte EX58 UD5 board if that helps.

If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Although i think this is all i can get with only Sata 2.

Thanks,

v1bez

i have the same mobo, it supports sata 6Gb's. u sure u just not got it set up from sata 2 ?
Different connection for sata 3.
no need for reg change on that board as well, change it to Achi in bios & all well :)

You sure? I've checked plenty of sites, my manual and even the official specs and everthing shows SATA2 and not 3?

Also i can not just set AHCI on just the SSD, it does it for the whole system. It also makes loading up a lot slower as it goes through checking everytime i restart/turn on the pc.

I now also now have my hard drives showing up in my task bar as shown below;

if your using it as a boot drive, dont expect the speed program to give you a reliable number, remember that the whole system inclusing that program is running off it as well during the test

like trying to run an internet speed test whilst downloading a file :)

Yeah that's understandable, from looking around the results i got are pretty much on par or just below what SATA2 can do. I could maybe get a bit better, but overall still twice as fast as my normal drives.

Should i be getting the checking on startup and that shown in the picture above though?

Right,
6x SATA2 on Intel ICH10R
4x SATA2 on Gigabyte SATA2 chip

So no, you wont improve much on 250-300MB/s. You can get a PCIE SATA3 card quite cheap, but if you've just moved from HDD to SSD you should be enjoying the 'immediateness' and 0 access time of your new drive anyhow :)

Yeah i am loving that aspect of it, makes loading things less of a chore now seeing it load pretty much instantly.

Thanks for getting back to me, pretty good with all other aspects of the PC just new to SSD's and AHCI etc.

I am just worried as i have not been able to just set the SSD to AHCI but instead it does it for all hard drives on my system. Also whenever i start the computer before it loads windows it checks the drives all the time and from the above screenshot it shows all my hard drives listed as a plug and play drive.

I guess this is down to AHCI as i turned it off a little while ago to check and no checkup on startup and hard drives are listed normally and not on my task bar as removeable.

According to that 1st screenshot, your drive is being used AHCI and you said you set the BIOS already. I would switch to Intel RST drivers though rather than the Microsoft ones if you can (assuming the SSD is plugged into the blue Intel ports (guessing from the gigabyte webpage above!))

As for the plug-n-play aspect - dunno, that could be a BIOS feature. Someone with your board or similar may come along and comment on that.

Yeah it's plugged into the Blue SATA2 ports shown on the motherboard with my other 3 drives and my DVD writer.

I originally installed and the drive was showing as IDE and i had a read about and it mentioned doing the REG mod and switching to AHCI would make the drive faster so i've done that.

I'll have a look at the Intel RST drivers now. It's pretty weird regarding the pnp aspect, as i normally only get that with USB memory sticks.

Thanks again, for helping out the best you can! :)

I upgraded to my new system today and it's much better now!

Sorry about the pic being a bit off ratio wise, i was using a different resolution as i haven't installed my GFX drivers yet.

I was puzzled by this when I set mine up but they disappeared once I installed the IRST drivers which it looks like you have done now :)

Yup as soon as i had installed the IRST, it went away and was left with and IRST program instead which is much better.
