New Students Bank Help

I don't think it's possible. If they find your student loan is not paid into the account they will remove the student privileges or close the account.

Seriously! i may soon owe natwest a quarter of my annual income

I had a student overdraft with my natwest student account and had my student loan paid into a halifax current account.

It didn't once get questioned by natwest.

If you read the terms and conditions, the only thing that needs to be done is a regular payment into the account (Natwest anyway). As far as I know, this only needs to be something like wages from a part-time job.

Bare in mind that the Maestro card is utter pap if not used at a shop- You really need either a Mastercard or a Visa to shop at a large number of online places.

Cheers

I'm with HSBC as well and find it ok.

Well having done this when i was a student, and knowing hundreds of people who also do/did it i KNOW its possible...you only need a few braincells to work out how to do it and if you go to uni you should have them!!

Frowned upon yes....illegal, not sure its against the law but the banks dont like it and ask you to say its your only account blah blah unenforcable rubbish!

Good stuff - I've been a Natwest "customer" for about 2 years now and I was just planning to upgrade to a student account in a couple of months for now. (even through I get no student loan, grumble grumble, as I've lived in France for 3 years!) Good to see what's available etc. I'm not sure I'll bother with a credit card straight away - I don't like spending money that I don't own!

I'm very bored and had to do it anyway so i've been looking at student bank accounts and thought i'd save some of you some time by giving a quick summary of some banks.

Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Interest free overdraft - up to £2000
  • No fee creditcards
  • Possession insurance
  • Student finance advice

Bingo right there! Been with the royal for nearly 10years now, excellent bank. They also have competitions to enter all the time, won quite a few things from them :)

You've missed out all of the RBS Royalties stuff, which includes quite a few things you've listed under HSBC.
The best bank for anyone to go with is whichever is on campus. It's so frustrating having to find a branch away from lecture halls on an hour lunch break, or having to do everything over the phone because you just can't get into a branch.

The website wasn't very helpful to be honest.

I'm near to nearly every bank mentioned though, Edinburgh Uni is in the city center where all those banks have a premises.

Fair enough. Although i'm not the type of person who goes to the hassle of setting up 6 different accounts just to get a 10% discount at blockbuster.

The terms and conditions of the banks (HSBC anyway) state that you must have only 1 student account. They also say they will share information about you. If your bank finds out, they may remove the student benefits or close the account.

Whether they actually can be bothered is different. But hey, if you want to do it, then go for it.

As I say, i don't think breaching bank conditions is of enough benefit compared with what would happen if my credit card was cancelled. Ooooh look!! A free CD :p

Muchos ++++ for taking the effort to make this post :)

Though the lack of boobs makes me sad :(

From personal experience, Lloyds give you £1,500.00 interest-free straight off, then upon graduation that turns into a £2k interest free overdraft until a couple of years after graduation.

Though I should add their customer service, IMO, could be better delivered by a monkey standing on its head with its balls wedged firmly down its throat.

Rich_L I meant for a non student account if you were replying to me :) I mean an overdraft of £5 if my overdraft limit is £100. I havn't bothered to convert my account to student status yet because I didn't need the free overdraft before.

this thread seems appropriate for my question. I'm a second year student, with a regular natwest account, I never bothered to get a student account because i didnt need the overdraft.
However, now I could do with a decent interest-free overdraft to get me out of a tight spot. Can I convert my existing account to a student account? And can I do that in any branch? And If I can, then what papers will they want to see to prove I am a student?

Thanks
Clarkey

I have one with HSBC and they totally mess me around but judging by what other people have said I could just be having a bad experience!
I only went with them to get the free rail card but when it came to it they didn't give me one - they could only offer me the £50!
When I first got it they used to phone me up every week and ask me how much I was going to be depositing that week (as though there was a required amount I had to pay weekly), which I have never known with any other bank.
I did use my overdraft but I wasn't over it. When it came to this year (2nd year) they wouldn't increase the amount of my overdraft because I apparently didn't meet requirements! It clearly states in the contract that it should increase each year.
Anyway, you could be fine with them. I just wish I had chosen LloydsTSB!

Call it a typical 15.2%

On £5, you pay 0.76p :)

It will increase, subject to application.

For instance, there are multiple increases in place for people with Barclays student accounts. However, if there is less than £1500 deposited throughout the year, then an increase is not on the cards.

HSBC
  • Price promise (If you find a branded item which you have bought within a period of time for more than £10 cheaper then they will make up the difference)
Do you know what the period is by any chance? Quite interested by this as I bought an iPOD a little while ago :)
[edit] Just checked and it's 60 days but the item has to be bought from the 'UK high street'. Most electrical stuff isn't covered either.[/edit]

I think they need some papers there is actually information on the sites usually or you could go in an ask at the bank or your Uni

I don't think Lloyds TSB do actually give you a £1,500 overdraft in your first year. My gf is with them at the moment (has been for years now) and upon creating the account, she got the usual £1000 overdraft, which she then asked to be upped to £1,250, but that was the very highest she could go to.
