New sub forum

Out of curiosity why have threads regarding benifita been put there?

People handing out good career advice are arguably not going to be the same people with good advice on claiming benifits

The way I see it that carer-related posts will get fairly serious responses in the new section, which is what the thread-starters are after. GD is mainly office banter :-)

That's one way to look at it. Another is that lots of people that could offer advice tend only to use GD, and certain technical forums for specific issues, and aren't even likely to see threads in a career sub-forum, never mind answer them. That includes me.

Time will show us one way or the other, I suppose.

So a sub forum you know about, and are unsure about.....is going to contain posts that are unknown and/or you are unlikely to see.....right.

If you cared you would go into a newly focused and dedicated sub-forum to give feedback.

Quite frankly career/what do I do/should I change job posts are a very frequent sight in GD. I think a sub forum is warranted.

But say theres somone who's looking for advice on becoming a plumber, they post in GD and theres 15 plumbers who read gd that day 10 read the thread 5 bother to reply. He got 5 bits of advice.

Now lets say the same person posts in the new sub forum, of the 15 plumbers that read gd only 2 enter that sub forum and only one decides to reply.

Its at the top of gd for me ang many others its going to vanish from our radar just like the sticky threads at the top of gd do.

Youve only got to look st rhe drop in the number of replies in cooking and diy rhreads since they left gd and those are interesting topics.

CV help is fairly boring so is unliklwy to become somones daily read like gd

I'm with Tefal. I've had a few threads go from active and informative to dead within minutes of being moved out of GD into one of the sub forums.

I post threads on OcUK GD because there are lots of people in them so the chances of getting answers is high.

I'm not a heavy forum user. I skim through GD, and audit tech forums when I have a specific need. If a career thread was in GD I may well see it, and if I have anything relevant to add I might add it. But I'm not actually looking for careers threads so am unlikely to go hunting for them.

Do I care enough? I'm not here looking to give careers advice. So whether I say anything depends entirely on the thread title and subject. There are careers I know something about and would probably comment, but a lot I know nothing about and wouldn't. I don't care enough to go hunting specifically for careers threads to comment on, no.

I have no opinion on whether a sub-forum is warranted or not. Either having it or not is fine with me. My point is that relatively light users like me probably won't see threads in sub-forums for subjects that aren't what we're here for, but might in GD.

The right way to go i say, it get's very boring seeing all these threads pop up with the greedy people wanting more money for just plugging ethernet cables in :D

We definitely need a poll forum... definitely. Somewhere we can all start our own polls without having to ask the mods to do it for us.

Got coursework? Poll
Got a burning issue? Poll
Pancakes or mustard? Poll

Another sub forum?

Its not like GD is being clogged up by career development threads?

Actually I think you're missing the point that there's a large number of discussions and questions that people will ask except it was all banded onto one thread.

Previously there's been people wanting feedback but that's been lost in the thread.

True - people will probably continue wth that thread but now it's got a sub forum it's likely to get more active. Especially with the changes in April as contractors move to perm positions.

Well at least there is a dedicated section now for those who need it. It also means that GD is free from these threads. People can now post and expect serious reply's as opposed to the silliness that GD often offers up.

Maybe the 3 people are reading some of the stuff already gathered there, in one place, not all scattered throughout GD.
