Hi there,

It's been a good month and overall a good year, the overtime and bonuses have stacked up well and I decided I want to get a new PC (mines really getting long in the tooth).

I've not really kept up to date with the whole hardware thing, I just don't have the time these days, so I'm looking for advice of what to buy.

The machine will be used for 2 main scenarios:

1. Personal - Playing online games (WoW mostly) and some FPS, would like to be able to play CoD4 etc if possible. Then there is the encoding, I like to use FRAPS to record in game stuff and make movies.

2. Learning - I have a shed load of MS and Citrix exams to take over the next year and I want to have a fairly decent learning environment set up. My idea is to install VMWare workstation and setup around 4 - 6 virtual machines (won't always be all running at same time) with various servers and software on to use for study.

I'm setting aside a budget of £1000 - £1200, in that I'd like if possible a Quad Core CPU and 4GB of RAM, I also need a copy of Vista 64-bit (No idea what version to go for, guessing Ultimate is the way to go).

So over to the more knowledgable, I have no preference over Intel/AMD, same applied with nVidia/ATI, I just want the best bang for buck.

well if you want to build it now, then look for:

antec 900 gamer's case or other such

and a copy of vista 64bit, home premium is the best value for money i hear.
should be short enough of your total to add extra HDDs and optical drives if you wish

ugh beaten to it

Cheers guys. You've been most helpful.

On a side note, only really going for Vista as its good to get some experience with it (may sit the Vista exam some day), I may not install it as the host OS, instead just put it on a vm to play about with.

I have XP x64 fully licensed already, so that would probably make the best host OS.

Going to be one hell of a change from my AMD 64 3200 and X1950XT (AGP) to this beast.

Merry Xmas to all.

Just a quick question, does the IP35 support SLI?

Was just thinking if I have the spare cash a couple of months down the line I could add a 2nd GPU.

Actually another question, would it be worth it?

Probably not, since in a couple months the 9 series will be out and likely the 9800 GTX's will be not longer after so it'd be better to get that rather than another 8800 GTX... although I guess it does depend on the 8800 GTX's price at the time, but I can't see it lower than £200 then.

Cool, I'll stick the cash in the back burner and wait for a new generation of GPU then.

Sorted, just need to get all the xmas nightmare out of the way and get my order placed.

Really looking forward to having a new system to play about with. Would the Mobo/Ram support small overclocks? I would like to stick to air cooling so nothing massive on the oc front.

Looks a fantastic new system, I'm sure you'll be over the moon with it. Overclocking a small amount should be very easy, something like 311x9 instead of 266x9 stock would give you 400 Mhz extra, but you'd need to lower the FSB:DRAM ratio or that'd put your RAM at 933 Mhz. Easy to do though, when you get it all up and running just ask for help doing that and you'll get it, people on this forum are very helpful.
