Right Uni finished earlier then expected this year so iv’e been working my butt off to bring my balance into the green, now it’s time to reap the rewards!

It’s been a little while since my last large upgrade and I’m a bit behind on the current performance hardware so bare with me please.

Firstly the parts for the upgrade:

Secondly existing parts I can cannibalise for the build:

What I’m after is a decent overclock to about 3GHz and no need to make any crucial system upgrades for the next 2 years.

So any “What the hell are you doing you intellectually deficient individual?!” type comments and/or recommendations and/or changes?

Any input is much appreciated as always :)

have a look at the giagbyte P35 DS3P mobo.

rest looks fine.

Any particular reason to choose one over the other?

Certainly I have no need for the WiFi function of the P5K and the upside down orientation of the case means that the heatpipe system is causing me some concern.

Just spotted the PC2-8500C5 is on offer this week.

The P35 chipset beats the 965 chipset hands down. If you've got the budget, go for the P5K Deluxe.

so is there summat wrong with the p35 version of the ds3p, seemed a decent combination of decent mobo (DS3P) combined with the newer chipset ?

Sparky :

main things : difference in price (specially as wifi isnt an issue), ds3p is a decent clocker and it has the added advantage of being the p35 chipset same as the PK5.

The P5K is supposed to be an incredible board though. Seem to think it really kicked ass on anandtech's run through.

And to the OP: "A bit out of date"? Hell no, that original spec is ******' awesome. :D

I had a look about :)

Do you know of any issues relating to the P5K and being upside down affecting system temps?

not specific too the p5k, but older boards with the heat pipe cooling did have issues, best bet is the mobo forum.

Well in the end i ended up going with the following:

E6600
BFG 8800GTS 640
Vista 32bit
Crucial 6400
Gigabyte DS4
Thermalright 120Ultra Extream uber stupid big cooler thing...

CPU temps at idle low 20's @ load low 30's

Thanks for the help :)
