New System (minus GPU) for under £500 . .thx in advance :)

Getting ready to order but wondered if there was jst as good but cheapr memory out there? any difference btween the 35 quidish 2 x 2gb and the 55 quid one here:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-172-CS

??

Do you mean these two?

If so, YES there is a difference. The second one is DDR3, the first is DDR2. There's isn't, performance wise, that much difference (DDR3 is slightly faster), but AM3 motherboards use DDR3 (which is what you need), and other ones use DDR2. The 775 motherboards use DDR2, which is why RJC posted that up there.

I would have said get this:

But it's out of stock right now. :D

That spec looks good, and I'm sure you'll go on fine building it. You'll have more experience than me, I'e never built my own (although that'll change this saturday). Fixed loads, but never built one.

Everyone here will be happy to guide you through it, I'm sure.

The board can only take DDR3 the slots are slightly different and not inter-changeable.

The CPU can work on DDR2 (cpu has dual memory controlers) boards but you need to know the board has the latest BIOS to support the new cpu.

That's a pretty good spec, but the Tri-core 720 will beat the E8400 in almost all cases, plus, I included a CPU cooler, which will help you overclock the chip, or at least keep it cool.

The F1 Spinpoints are a better choice than the Maxtor drives, because I believe the F1's are single platter drives, and the Maxtor drives are double platter (basically, single platter means 500GB on one disc, rather than 250GB per disc, which means higher density and faster reads/writes). Plus, the F1's are supposed to be more reliable. The 32MB cache means very little in real use.

Case and PSU is fine, you could change that if you like, depends if you prefer the look of the case, and the PSU is a great alternative (maybe more reliable than OCZ actually).
