So I have taken the plunge and retired the long sweated 8700k and bought an x570 and 5900x AMD system.

I do like a good overclock having ran my 8700k at 5.4ghz on water for the best part of 4 years.... and I believe to get the most out of zen 3 you need good ram.

So I have 16gb of g skill 3000mhz cl15 from my intel system, ... So question is should I keep on using that.... Or sell it and buy some 3600mhz cl16 ? (I see cl14 is even sillier money) something like g skill neo.

If 16GB is enough for your needs then I'd just keep it for now, you'll probably upgrade to 32GB at some point in the life of the system so I'd consider moving it on then.

If that's Crucial Ballistix kit, it would overclock very likely easily to 3600MHz.
But if you want longevity comparable to 12 cores, 32GB would definitely be in order to handle things you can keep on background during games.

You already spent so much money to get an x570 & 5900x, it is wise to spend a little more to get a decent 32GB 3600Mhz kit with good timings in order to get the full performance of your new cpu.

And don't skimp on timings(like I did) they do matter in some situations in ZEN 3.

Α benchmark of mine with the ram at XMP vs tighter timings, I get lucky with my ram and I manage to significantly lower the timings.

That's at 720p though

What's the difference at 1440p/4k though?

Nothing.

I love how people bench in a way to benefit their view. Reality is if the system used is on anything higher than 1080p then there is no difference or so little that in real world not noticed.

Thanks. My current kit is g.skill trident z RGB... It did OC to 3200mhz cl15 on my intel system...but I had to reduce to he cpu OC to 5.2 GHz from 5.4ghz for stability. I game and record / produce music on a 3440*1440p ultra wide with a 3090. I can grab another identical set of 2*8gb trident z sticks and know it will boost perf for £100... Where as buying 32gb of decent cl16 will cost £300... RAM is so damn expensive... I'm struggling to see if I'm going to get a benefit for that extra cash. I'm more worried about the impact on CPU overclocking tho ..but I heard most 5900x oc about the same?

I might just see if I can get my existing kit to 3200 cl14 manually and if so...grab another 16gb of same stuff ..and save myself a stack

What is the point to bench 1440p/4k if the gpu was the limiting factor? We want to find out how much faster the 5900x will become by just dropping the latency, and the answer is 6% in avg and 15% in min fps. So this is useful information because we now know that in situations when the cpu is not limited by something else is going to be faster by X% when dropping Y amount of latency.
