Hello there,

Looking at building a complete new system for the first time since ooh 2012. Could I ask you for opinions on the following spec.
The graphics card situation is of course a bit daft, so I've opted for 9070XT - good idea?
Also mobos - really not sure what constitutes good/necessary these days, any advice here appreciated.

Looking for a good solid build to last and upgrade.
  • AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Sixteen Core 5.70GHz (Socket AM5) Processor
  • Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard
  • Lian Li Galahad II Trinity AIO 360mm ARGB CPU Water Cooler
  • Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB EXPO 64GB (2X32GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C40 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Asus Radeon RX 9070 XT Prime OC 16GB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card
  • MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 UK PSU 1000W 80 Plus Gold Power Supply
  • Corsair Force MP700 PRO 2TB NVMe PCIe 5.0 M.2 Solid State Drive

Thanks!

I'd swap that out until this is sorted:

Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard
Decent board, used to suggest it a lot, due to being one of the cheapest PCI-E 5.0 boards. Doesn't have USB4 though, unlike X870 and there are now B850 boards which (mostly) retain PCI-E 5.0 and can be cheaper. If you particularly like the Strix brand, then it is fine.

Corsair Force MP700 PRO 2TB NVMe PCIe 5.0 M.2 Solid State Drive
Is anything you do meaningfully bottlenecked by storage? You could almost buy 2x 2TB higher-end PCI-E 4.0 drives for the price of one of these (unless you're getting a deal).

What case is this going in?

Ok, thanks.

PSU - could switch out to a Corsair RMe Series RM1000e or Gigabyte UD1000GM 80 PLUS Gold or even the Strix, but not particularly attached to the brand. Had good experience over the years with Gigabyte and Corsair.

Motherboard - X870 looks like a good option with outgoing too crazy on price.

SSDs - I was wondering if that was overkill. Corsair Force MP600 ELITE 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 x2? More storage always welcome!

For the case, I am thinking I'll go with Fractal Design North XL. Loving the aesthetic of it.

The RMe is a lower tier model than the A1000G (loses 3 years of warranty, for example). Gigabyte umm, I don't really look at them, after the whoopsie *.

The Strix PSUs used to be solid (Seasonic was the OEM), but the new ones are different. I think hwbusters has a review of the newer model.

Yeah, they're fine, but if you don't care about USB4 there's nothing wrong with the Strix B650E-F.

I don't keep up with Corsair SSDs 'cos they have so many models. At OCUK, two of the cheapest higher-end PCI-E 4.0 drives are the T500 and Fury Renegade. SN850X or G70 Pro are a bit more expensive, but also higher-end drives.

Should be fine then.

Ah, yes fire bad.

PSU - Asus ROG Strix 1000W Gold Aura Edition Modular 80+ Gold ATX 3.0 PCIe Gen 5.0, then, perhaps.

That is pretty tasty, but the Fractal has me!

Think I may be settling, just about -

  • Asus ROG Strix X670E-F Gaming WIFI (Socket AM5) DDR5 ATX Motherboard

  • Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB EXPO 64GB (2X32GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C40 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit

One other little thing - any views on sound cards?

Most gaming builds don't include one, so I couldn't help you there, but there's a sound subforum where you could ask for suggestions.
Modern motherboard sound chipsets are far improved from 15-20 years ago. In many years on here I haven't seen anyone suggest a standalone sound card on any build.
