New system - What extras do I need?

As the nice Mr taxman is giving me money back, I'm intending to buy new computer bits.

This is what I have so far in the basket:

Core i7 bundle

Antec 300 case (I like my cases to look low key rather than be neon monsters) - it lists some fans as being optional - does that mean you get them, but it's up to you to fit them, or that it just has mounting points for them?

Seagate 500GB barracuda

I already have a PSU and graphics card etc. What I'm mainly wondering is what extras do I need to purchase as far as fans, thermal paste etc are concerned, and what would people recommend?

You have to purchase the optional fans separately
Id look at a Samsung Spinpoint F1 HDD myself, either 320 or 640gig
You need an aftermarket cooler if you're thinking of OC'ing(that'll fit the new socket 1366), which you should be, the Noctua is pretty good but expensive, unless youre doing extreme OC'ing you dont really need to buy separate thermal paste, the stuff that comes with decent coolers tends to be enough.

would defo look at the F1 over the seagate. Looks like a nice setup other than that.

re: Overclocking *1 - I wasn't actually intending to, but I understand that the i7s overclock very well?

*1 Last time I overclocked a machine you did it by moving jumpers on the motherboard and praying. (They were work machines too - was a gaming/net cafe and we were trying to eek the last little bit of performance out of our P150s. *2)

*2 Yes, a long time ago. 1997ish, iirc.

If you are buying a 920 it's begging to be overclocked.
Google around for the guides its so easy compared to the good ol' days.

yep they sure decent and cheap hoever these two words should not follow i7 cpu cooler

you payed that much for the chip why skip on £40 for a top air cooler

Yes, but they wont work on an i7 socket 1366 rig.

That leaves you with a TRUE or a Noctua, both are excellent.

Noctua
TRUE + Bracket for 1366

Youll need to get a graphics card too and power supply, how much gaming do you do?

You need to make sure your current graphics card won't bottleneck an i7, especially if you are going to overclock.

Have graphics card and PSU - basically, everythign not listed I have - card probably should be changed up (is a GTX8800 768MB), but didn't buy it a long time ago (August), and since my motorbike will also need money spent on it soon, new card can wait a month or two. (I wasn't intending to change PCs until end of the year, but then hey, tax refund.

)

Build night is tonight. Not done actual harware PC builds in about 5 years. (Do lots of basic replacement stuff for work and my own upgrades, but not done a full build.)

If fan are listed as optional in cases = need to buy

Noctua has fans and grease, mobo and psu will have all the connectors

also why get the bundle? this is almost £100 cheaper with better mobo(basically UD5 = Extreme without the the big cooling pipe between PCI slots and CPU), lower latency ram 7 7 7 20 and you don't need retail i7 since you should get a noctua CPU cooler if you want to OC

with saving you can get a better case like a nice Lian Li than a budget Antec 300 or a second hand 88GTX for sli

PS too bad just noticed your last post, that you are building tonight, oh well you lose

Except I'm not building because I just discovered that they've shipped everything except the CPU.

There are words I would like to use, but they would upset the mods.
