Alright guys, bit of a lurker here but decide to finally sign up for an account :)

Been reading a fair bit the past months week following conroe and I had my mind-set that I'll let other people be the guniea pigs and test all the new things, wait for price drops..

Last night I saw my friend ordered a E6700 with a few other bits and bobs, with a 2 week lan starting up over here soon, with my ageing 3 and a half year old system (guesstimate), I decided for an upgrade.

At the moment I have an old sockey 478 P4 2.8, MSI i865p, 2gb OCZ 3200.
I've run off a 5900ultra for years then got a 6600 free from a mate, then a 6800ultra, which tbh I get harldy any performance increases in bf2.

It's nearing the end of it's lifespan, it's still plays a lot of games just not much, and in awefully low modes.
I can't really do much overclocking on this setup, I don't really want to spend anything else on this system to make it any faster.

So here we go, another system to last me (who knows?)..
Don't need monitor or DVD/CD drive, kb/mouse from existing system.
I do want to keep the old system to give to someone.

Need a HSF...Not sure which one, Scythe Ninja/Mine?

I will be overclocking this system.
Did I miss anything, does anyone recommend a change in something?

Yes, X6800, I know a lot of people agree it's a waste of money, even I did at a time, but I will be going phase change and/or Watercooling a few months down the line.
I want the option there, I know I could save a hell of a lot going for a 6700, heck I might even consider it still that i've got time.

I again, want to go all out (almost) and have something that will last me a while, if anything 6 month or so down the line all I will need is a GPU change.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi there,

Conroe CPU's are big on overclocking, if you want something that will last I would get the 2.4ghz one, as you can overclock it easily (apparently) to 3.2ghz and run in comfortably at that speed for a while.

Get a Scythe Ninja, very efficent and huge cooler! Also, swap the PSU for a OCZ Gamestream or Seasonic S12 600W.

Swap the case for a Akasa Eclipse 62, much more cooler, quiter and roomy to work in. It has a removeable motherboard tray for you too! But this will mean fans, so throw in 2x Akasa Ambers.

74GB Raptor is fine, but do you not want something with a bit of space? I think a Samsung 250GB Spinpiont will bring more space and quiet performance.

I cant comment on the RAM, not something I know much about.

Thanks, seems to be the one to go for.

Went with the Lian-Li one so it would fit ontop of the VapoChill in the future...hmm.

Will be getting a secondary HDD sometime soon for space.

I'll have a little look around at dimension on the phase-change unit and have a see... thanks.

If you need something to go on top of that then go for a Lian Li PC7+. It has 2x120mm fans (of which are quite loud, but nothing a fan controller cant sort out). Its basically the same as a PC61 Plus but without a removeable motherboard tray and a 120mm at the back instead of the PC61's 80mm.

Edit- But check whether the Scythe Ninja will fit, im not sure on this.

Actually the Akasa Eclipse 62 is starting to look pretty damned sexeh if you ask me and it's would be nice to have more room/airflow..

/changes order a bit.
