new system... advice needed

Hi all

my first post to overclockers :)

im looking to buy a new system to replace me 5 year old bog standard packard bell.

im ideally looking for a powerful machine that will also be future proof.

after looking around Pc and dell ( was close to buying one of the XPS machines with the I7 processor but thought i would look here.)

i am very keen on the Titan Goliath espically with the deal this week.

i would be getting it with the ATI radeon HD 4870 1024 and a 1TB HDD

before i make my very first overclockers purchase i wanted some expert opinons i.e you guys ;) is it worth it? is there anything else i should be thinking about etc.... just wanted to knoww before i part with my cash :)

Thanks a lot

What's your budget?

What are you going to primarily be using the pc for?

Oh, and Welcome to ocUK! :)

this was the dell i was looking at

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/hom...35mt_d00sx04~~TqjyEJ6L&m_3=188402&mo=3~188402

and a acer one that i saw in the store that seem fast..

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...36848&category_oid=#productInformationSection

this comes out at £800 for the unit

thats why i was considering the titan goliath as it has already been overclocked?

tbh im quite a noob when it comes to overclocking so it has not been something i have considered.

my main priorties will be power and future proof.

ps tbf i think im confusing myself :)

thanks

How about this?

You get a 4890, not a 4870. The Dell only has a GTS 240 which is nowhere near as powerful as a 4890 (even though they are both 1GB!)

Dell use the cheapest low quality motherboards and RAM. And in this the RAM is far faster (1600MHz) compared to Dell's 1067MHz. The motherboard here also has lots of overclcoking potential when you're ready. The cooler supplied with the i7 will keep your CPU until you start overclocking when you need a new one.

edit : The fans at the bottom are just extras, but they will improve airflow in your case and reduce temperatures a fair bit.

looks good :)

few questions

is it better than the acer one.

would i be able to build it :O considering my knowlednge limited when building i system from scratch? i assume this is better than the Titan Golith?

lastly if i did build it myself and couldnt get it to work i would be a bit stuck and if i got the pre built titan i could send it bk for oc to fix? but if the system above is better... maybe thats worth the risk.....

Thank you very much for your help :) its apprecitated

The systems go together very easily - it's basically just a very expensive Lego set.

There are loads of guides all over the net, for example one starts here.

If you find it isn't working, we're all here to help you, and everyone's very patient so don't worry about being a n00b lol.

If there isn't a problem the guys on here can't solve, then nobody can!

And, if something does go badly wrong (and the chances are slim) then you can send it to a PC shop, or get one of the guys off here who live nearby to fix it.

It's totally worth the risk IMO, I started my first build a complete n00b and £850 worth of components and very shaky hands. I read the instructions and watched the guides, and I couldn't believe my eyes when I pressed the power button and everything lit up. 'Tis a great feeling to know you've built your own PC.

There is a CPU cooler supplied in the same box as the processor. However this cooler is only good for running the CPU with no overclock - the increased voltages that are needed to overclock the chip cause it to run hotter, therefore a more efficient cooler is needed. You can start off with the supplied CPU cooler for a time, then when you feel you're ready to try your first overclock, it is very simple to install a new one.

Oh and your other question about the Asus board (I assume? You wrote Acer) versus the Foxconn I supplied, there isn't much difference, just personal preference. But the Foxconn is a fiver cheaper and I for one think it looks pretty damn cool :D

thanks very much i am still quite nervous about doing it myself :O

can i get your opinon on these 2 pre build systems

because if there is not much difference i think i would rather get one instead of me making a mess of it and i also have a lot of coursework todo so finding time may be an issue :O

the titan Goliath 837.95 inc VAT only 30 more than the build myself option?

I completely understand your decision! One spark of static and blam you've destroyed your PC. The first system is the one I'd go for - the second is already out of date!

thanks very much for your help and time:)

just for future reference when i know a bit more about building systems, is it noramlly better to build your own?

for example is the one you quotated me above that much better than the titan Goliath

The one I specced you is quite a bit better - more powerful graphics card, faster hard drive and faster dvd drive. However the Titan Goliath comes with a custom cooler - the Akasa Nero. With that, you will have headroom to overclock quite a bit with it.
