Hi all,

Ive been a long time lurker and finally got around to registering today.

Im in the market for a new pc, but Im not 100% sure on performance and costs yet. So far I have come up with the following.

I upgraded my graphics several months back from an 8800GTS to a 5850HD toxic card and I am happy enough to keep it going for now and possibly grab a second in a few months when to crossfire them.

Im not convinced on the ram, whether I would notice a boost over some stock Giel. Else whether it would be best to grab 2 sets of the Gskill listed or 1 set of the 2x4Gb chips with 9-9-9 timings.

My current machine is¨:

Q6600 G0 @stock 2.4Ghz,
MS 7360 Neo-F board
5850HD
Vista Ultimate 64
4GB OCZ plat pc6400 6-6-6
1000 watt unbranded psu
Thermaltae Soprano case.

My build is a few years old now and starting to underperform. I could OC the cpu however I have had not much luck.

I aim to use this system for gaming and so I am looking for a system that will perform me for the next few years.

I decided to change the HDD and the PSU for definite.

The ram I am more inclined to take the Gskill 2x4GB kit than the Geil, having never previously used Geil before and its only £10 more expensive.

Any other places I could improve upon? Almost tempted to scrap the BR Drive and run without an optical drive at all.
 
without a optical drive, how would you install windows?

Disclaimer, I know there is some guff about installing windows on to a USB stick from another pc, but why bother?

I have an optical on this pc, I could transfer it to the new build just to instal then pull it out again :)

Then again there is all the possible BR movies I *could* potentially buy if I take it. Will no doubt get it though, its only an extra £45.
 
i would switch the oem 64 bit windows out for a retail version, ive had to reinstall windows so many times and changed my pc 4 times so im glad i changed at the last minute.
 
Cheers for the comments sorry Ive been away a few days.

Glad to see a backing for the Geil, I may still make the switch to it yet. Shall be ordering on Tuesday or Wed depending on the missus coming back with the credit card and my work actually deciding to pay me joy!

As to oem v retail I will stick to oem. I will only change the motherboard out for the same model when Asus ship the fixed Sandy Bridge boards, so that can be a pretty easy phone activation to get it working again.

I need a new psu recomendation though, what Stulid linked me is no longer available via ocuk the item no longer exists on the website. I was tempted to sling another 5850 in their in the future for some xfire fun, so the psu would need to allow for this extra power.

Also in relation to that extra card, what would happen if I stuck a toxic 5850hd with one of the msi twin fozr´s, or would I best matching the cards as much as possible?

5850/5870 any model is fine, not sure about clocks though? i think you put the fastest card in the top slot. as for a psu if you plan on x fire you want something with 4 of the right pcie plugs, i got the ocz 700w but it doesnt have enough for sli, unless i use those horrid adapters.

Unless you use Steam, you would also need the optical drive for installing games. Also ripping CDs/DVDs etc. :)

I have used the USB install method once before, putting Win7 onto a netbook. (I didn't own an external DVD drive at the time).
