New to building PC's

right ok thanks a lot for that.... so you think i shoudl change to *** 8igdave said? is that cheaper? or?

The E2180 is cheaper, if you're comfortable overclocking go for that one (if you're not you can learn on here). The Q6600 is more expensive, but is a lot more future proof as its quad core, instead of just 2. Most apps at the moment cant use more than one core at a time, so it only makes it quicker for multitasking, but in future, games and apps will be developed multi threaded so theuy can use multiple cores at the same time. Its up to your preference really, and depends how long you'll keep the system before replacing or upgrading again

I didn't relise your budget was 600. Can it be streched or do i need to simplify?

If you could strech an extra 100 quid for the oem Q6600 it would be well worth it. The case could be cut down by 15/20 quid, could go for a 250gb hard drive. But it will put you near 700.

:EDIT:

Tghe new quads come out in january btw. You could wait till then and get a Q6600 for a lot cheaper. The new quads will only be about 5% faster clock for clock but they will overclock better.

When i say clock for clock i mean 3ghz Q6600 will be 5% slower then the new quad cores running at 3ghz. Not a lot in it really.

yea im not looking to buy all the parts together at the same time, coz i cant afford to do that!! im looking to get 3/4 parts depending on costs a month.

I dunno if buying some bits now and the rest later will be possible if you want it to work straight away. What do you have now??

it doesnt HAVE to work straight away. i've got a pc to use until it works. just wanna get it right, so the first month might get the case, powersupply gfx card etc, then the next month, processor (hopefully will be cheaper) and the rest.

If you're not going to be having it running you may as well just wait, prices generally go down. The new 8800gt is going to be coming out, which should make the 8800 gts cheaper so you might pick up a bargain. CPUs generally only come down, so waiting is best if you dont need it to run. If you're desperate to get some stuff now I'd get all but the CPU and graphics now.

Probably better saving up and buying them all at the same time, especially the parts that are changing quickly- CPU/mobo/gfx. With the current spec a 450w corsair would bring it within £5 of the budget.

ok thanks for the advice, when its all connected n stuff, is it difficult to configure?

Nope not really. You have to up the voltages on the ram as it defults to 1.8v but the geil wants somthing like 1.9 or 2.0 (not bothered in checking the exact) then tell it to boot from disk and put vista in.

Then the overclocking everyone can run you through that. Its just turning a few things off and putting a few numbers up. Not difficult just the name puts people off as it sounds harder then it is.

Id expect Nvida and ATI to be bringing a new card out between february and march. Its expected the Nvida one will be a dual GTX. Cant rember what they call it now. Basicaly its 2 gtx's but on one board. So its like sli but using one PCI-E x16 slot. Would probably work a lot better with 2.0 as well as it can draw more power.

To me there's no point in having kit sat around for a month or two and then find it doesn't work when the time comes.

Although most retailers bend over backwards to keep customers happy the sooner you find out you have a problem the better.

I would recommend buying at least the major components at the same time and if possible from the same retailer.

You are better off dealing with one firm for these components if you get problems otherwise you can find yourself between a rock and a hard place.

I'm not trying to put you off. I've just completed my first build and there were no problems and many others have found the same.
