Hello all,

I am trying to help my friend become a better FPS player, The problem my friend is having is he is finding FPS games too hectic and he seems to panic a lot when it comes to shooting, positioning and everything basically, and with that he becomes frustrated and quits. :/

Now my friend isn't a complete noob, I have been gaming along side him now for nearly 5 years and have seen him become an awesome player in many games like WoW, Eve and RTS games like starcraft and Company of Heros etc. Its just fps games he seems to struggle with.

I know fps isn't for everyone and you can't force people to play fps games but I know he'd turn out to be a tidy player if he gets used to it.

So I wanna ask what sort of games would you guys recommend for a new fps gamer?

So far we've tried Counter Strike Source, Bad Company 2 and MW2.
I Was kinda thinking of telling him to grab a copy of R6 Vegas 2 so he can adjust to a slower paced fps and be a bit more aware of whats around him.

bit of a weird post but cheers for your opinions

Wolfenstein 3D? That was my first fps.

Perhaps Half-life, its not as hectic as "modern shooters" like CoD, BF. And starting playing online if you panic when the lead starts flying is definitely a bad idea. Start on co-op or single player campaigns and gradually ramp up the difficulty.

Crysis / Crysis 2 might be good options, given that it has Stealth so he can set himself up prior to engaging - gives you that extra time you need to get your barings and assess the situation before you start shooting, and also lets you pick fights you want to fight. Crysis 2 also has "Tactical Options" where the game will tell you options you might want to go, such as whether to snipe some guys, avoid them, use a turret to kill them etc.

This may be a somewhat odd suggestion but maybe Portal? That way he can get used to movement, positioning etc. without having to deal with everything else.

Its for those reasons I suggested HL but at least in HL you get to shoot stuff and the amount of shooting ramps up nicely from a couple of headcrabs to rooms full of vortigaunts.
That and the fact that everyone should play half life.

id suggest offline cs source with bots, increase their skill level as he gets better and also deatmatch servers, to practice response times and learn the feel of his mouse/ tweak settings.

Yeah definintely start with offline single player or coop FPS games (i.e. serious sam), a good number of regular MP FPS players these days have 1000s of hours of experience with extremely honed skills.

FEAR and FEAR 2 are really good and are Quite scary and can make you jump at times

I would NOT suggest Unreal tornament lol as that can make you feal sick at times and is WAY to fast paced lol

He needs to get used to play FPS so any single player FPS titles played on easy, you cant jump into online play with experianced players and expect to be any good if you have not yet grasped the basics

UT99 + Quake 3

Play against bots and continue to up the difficulty every so often, as close to godlike as you can get.

Return to normal fps games, and your reflexes will be godlike.

I you trying to get him to be decent at fps multiplayer? If so surely the best thing to do would be to get him to play through some enjoyable single player fps. I just completed bbfc2 for example and thought that was a really enjoyable campaign.

Basically this. He might want to start on something relatively simple like Doom or Quake (original) on easy or normal mode and progress from there....

Thats the way I did it years and years ago now but it works. Could beat xaero on his own level on nightmare 10-0 by the end of it :D

Also an interesting thing I noticed was I gained vastly more reaction time and awareness when playing without sound. Tried it on COD black ops a few days ago on the PC and ended up with a score of 20-2 without getting a daft amount from killstreak rewards lol. Worth a go :P

I'd probably stay away from the likes of Counter Strike, well, the standard Hostage Rescue/Bomb Diffusal servers for a while anyway. Most new players who go on those don't seem to fair too well unless they're lucky, even some people who've been playing it for a year or more still struggle with it.

If you want to play Counter Strike instead of trying other games then stay on Deathmatch or Gun-Game servers for a while, that way it'll be less frustrating when you die because you wont have to wait for the round to end, you'll just respawn straight away. The fact that you have to wait so long after dying is what raises new player's frustration levels along with the fact that they've just been killed.

I was crap at Counter Strike for the first year or so but I was using a stupid Logitech Trackman mouse which was impossible to use because the ball kept spinning around once I'd aimed at someone and it wasn't generally very accurate but still :p

The new Call of Duty games are rubbish multiplayer wise. Even I find them annoying and I'm regularly at the top of the score-boards on CS. Too much nade spamming on Call of Duty for it to even be worth playing.

wow crazy amount of responses thanks very much ;)

Rainbow 6: Raven Shield.

I learnt on this and still go back at times to sharpen up.

They don't make games like this anymore. :(

Was what I used to play many years back, was thinking Vegas 2 similar with better eye candy if ya like ;)

Will deffo tell him to look into playing some single player fps, so many good suggestions here cant reply to them all but will run them all by him.

cheers again

Most games you introduced to your friend have been out for quite some time and this in itself i feel would be a major disadvantage as the vast majority of the folk he will be playing against will have a very good understanding of map's weapons and tactics ect. Perhaps when your friend has honed his skills in some SP sessions you could look at both getting a game new to the market to at least even the playing field slightly.

Portal is win, and cheap too. Probably free, since so many people got a free copy buying Portal 2. Best place to start - as mentioned, gives you a solid practice with positioning, movement etc without any of the impending death (mostly).

Good point.
