New to FPS Games

Call of Duty Modern Warfare is a good FPS, aswell as BC2. Try playing the single player to get used to the basic movements and positions. Your reaction time will get better too, once you've learned the basics then go onto multiplayer.

You could even try zombie mode on Call of Duty World at War or Black Ops, it's really slow paced and you can do co-op and teach him a few things.

Being good at FPS games takes a bit of time but once you've learned the basics then it's just a case of practicing and improving your reaction times.

Have to agree with Coltpython 3.

Multiplay COD4 is IMO still a very good learning curve, yes some of the maps become spammy etc, but you can play to your strenghts, i would suggest say COD4 TDM (quick respawn) or Domination gametype (objective based) for starters. That way he will get to learn the maps/glitches spawns etc.

There is 1 downside with COD4 though, you would have to rank up to get better weapons, however i do believe you start with a AK47 on COD4 which IMO is the best weapon in COD4 anyway LOL

Another thing to consider is your friends gaming style, IE does he push/rush etc or does he feel more comfortable holding back fireing from range??

This would dictate what class to set up etc.

Regards

just get him to play a few all-against-all death match games in something like HL. I found a few tweaks to the config files to make the game run as smoothly as possible + controls finely tuned helped me massively when I used to play Wolf:ET

Quake 3 is always good to start or I guess it's quake live now which is free . It's easy to get into and you don't die instantly like you can do in games like counter strike

Most games you introduced to your friend have been out for quite some time and this in itself i feel would be a major disadvantage as the vast majority of the folk he will be playing against will have a very good understanding of map's weapons and tactics ect. Perhaps when your friend has honed his skills in some SP sessions you could look at both getting a game new to the market to at least even the playing field slightly.

Thats a great point, I kinda thought of getting him to play older games before throwing him the deep end with the latest games so we started with Cs:Source and went from there, he just didnt seem to grasp the feel of Bad Company 2 and MW2 so black Ops is out the window.

Cod4 is another amazing fps. Loads of people still play mp. Its a simple fps but gameplay wise its really fun! :)

Team Fortress 2 is pretty easy going even whilst playing online.

Cheers everyone will deffo look into all these games and I'll post back in a week or so let you know how its going.

Once again appreciate your responses ;)

Team Fortress 2 is a good shout, found that pretty easy personally and it introduces you to all the basic class roles to be found in fps games.

Pyro is easiest, just spray in general direction of target and usually they catch fire.

Id just play a game that you both enjoy... forget 'tabbing' up the scoreboard and ignore it at the end of the game. No point getting frustrated at not having the best KDR or points tally early on as it will ruin the fun of it.

Instead play a FPS where you can stick together, do objectives as a pair or in a squad...dont learn towards getting him to play slow/camp as thats counter productive, just tell him to get stuck in.

Hardware wise, get his config sorted for the game you play, mouse, key binds etc... if he hasnt, maybe get a mouse that has more buttons or something.

Once he can nail his first FPS game, then others will naturally follow - but i think for your first one, go for something thats fun and has that lets play one more round ability... if its more of a chore to play, then the interest to improve will not be there.

Counter-strike Source? :D
Was the first FPS i had played at first i was just the same but you get use to it after a while.

CSS servers are now only populated by the die hard that have racked up 1000s of hours play so i would avoid.

For MP how about some coop first.
