Hi
I am interested in getting a NAS box WD mycloud. and WD red drives
not decided on size but will probably go for 2bay with 2 x 2tb drives
or if i can stretch 4 bay with 2 x 2tb drives that i can add to in the future.

At present i have for or five drives (external) that i carry around the house and connect depending on where i am. not a good enough solution, so want to go the NAS route

what i want to know is will any NAS box or specifically the WD one (maybe synology or similar) just connect by cable to my wireless router and enable me to acces it from either my main gaming pc in a spare room or the media pc in the lounge wirelesly without hard wiring them all.

I guessing they will but want to make sure first.

thx

Big fan of Synology too.

If you need disk redundancy, then you use some form of RAID. Synology lets you use "SHR" (Synology Hybrid Raid). This lets you chop and change disks as you go.

You can start with a 4 bay NAS and just 2 x 2TB disks. Later on you could add 2 x 4TB Disks, and then later on still update the original 2TB disks to 4TB disks as well. Obviously this is an example scenario, you should buy the biggest disk you can reasonably afford.

You have to stage such changes, i.e. you would swap out one 2TB at a time, make sure RAID rebuilt properly before doing the next, but the fact it's possible is awesome.

They have a RAID calculator you can use: https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator

Obviously with just 2 x 2TB you would only get 2TB usable space though.

great Thanks

Synology was in my option list so reading other articles also they seem to be top drawer.
i like the idea of being able to upgrade disks gradually if needed.

and the synology write speeds seem to be higher also from what i see.

cheers.
