Hi guys, i recently overclocked my i7 930 to 3.8 ghz i did everything properly using a guide and prime 95'd it for about 8 hours and it passed without going above 68C with my H-50 cooler.
I have the Gigabyte UD7, 6gb of corsair dominator and crossfire 5870's Vapor-X.
so my problem--- this may not be a problem at all but it jsut seemed a little odd. S i overclcoked my CPU and its stable at 3.8ghz but when i use CPUZ and similar programs to monitor voltages etc it is saying my core frequency is about 2.1 ghz and multiplier is 12x when at 0% load, as soon as i load up a demanding application such as BFBC2 or any game for that matter including prime 95, the frequency goes back upto 3.8ghz at 22x.
Seems a little odd? I personally thought it may be something to do with the bios, in that there are several Intel turbo boosts enabled and other things like that, so i disabled and the results wernt good a crash occured when i fired up prime 95, went back to enable them and all is good again.
So.... is it normal for the CPU to drop its frequency when not under load?
obviously i dont need my CPU at 3.8ghz all the time so i can see it as a slight benefit when the pc is idle and when im just browsing the internet but it may cause some issues so i want to be sure
Any more information about this will be greatly appreciated, this is my first overclock so im a bit of a newb with this but otherthan overclcoking i am not a newb.
Thanks
Schoie.
