Hi,

Had my PS3 for a few months now, but only used it for Blu-Ray. Never did get around to actually playing any games until now. I have Uncharted and have downloaded plenty of demo's from the PS store.

For the last 15 years I've strictly been a PC Gamer and although I have had consoles in the past they were used by my son or daughter, or myself only occasionally. So now I feel like escaping the desk and hanging out in the living room for some gaming. Mix things up a bit.

I'm fairly clued up on games and what I'd like to play so my only concern is the PS3 Controller. I have the DualShock 3 version.

Oh boy it's difficult to use over a mouse. Just tried the Bad Company demo and I'm really struggling. Even if I can see my target I struggle to get the cross hair over to him and those trigger keys just don't feel right. I wish they were curved outwards rather than in. I grabbed the 360 controller and it feels a little better. Now I'm not about to start playing the 360 as my boy plays that in his bedroom, but the controller just feels a little better.

I can live with the trigger buttons, but aiming just seems impossible. I'm wondering if I should stick at it with frustration, or avoid shooters and play some 3rd person games. Uncharted for example is awesome. I still suck it aiming, but not like with Bad Company.

Any of you guys made the switch from PC to PS3 and felt the same? How did you cope.

There's 2 add-ons I can recommend if you can stick with a dualshock:

Gioteck Real Triggers - connect onto L2 and R2 and curve them outwards. How people cope without them is beyond me...

FPSFreek - basically they're stick extenders, but they allow you to hugely increase the sensitivity on the sticks. You might well find you only need one on the right (aiming) stick.

If they're no good for you, you could always try the FragFX - it's essentially the left half of a dual shock connected to a mouse that replaces the right half. I couldn't get on with it myself, but I know people that swear by it.

I can recommend these. Helped me increase sensitivity from 3 to 7 on MW2. Like you said I only use one on the aiming stick.

To the OP:

I was much in the same boat as yourself. I have been a pc gamer for most of my gaming life but got a PS3 back in November. I much like yourself could never imagine using a controller over a mouse but after time you get used to it. I now dont even think twice when using it. Put in the time and you will soon be using it naturally.

Persist with it.

Tbh it's a non issue really. You get used to it very quickly, on top of that it's never as precise as keyboard/mouse so you get bags of auto-aim anyways.

I'd advise you buy killzone 2 and uncharted and play though those. By the time you've finished you'll be just as comfortable as with a keyboard/mouse.

I went from being a console only gamer to a mixture of both 360 and PC. Having played a lot of PC games. Its very hard to go back to the controller. It seems so "sluggish".

Using a controller for FPS games just felt wrong when I first started - you need to pick a fps game and play it all the way through (recommend COD4 or MW2) and I guarantee you that by then end of it you will be completely used to it.

I also have the trigger extenders and they're really good - only cost a couple of quid too and you can find them in most high street game retailers.

Had the same issue with console FPS games until i fully understood how much auto aim is used. I was trying to get the reticule over the exact point as you would in a PC shooter, rather than a close approximation that you use fro most console FPS games. So my advice is not to over adjust your reticule and just point at the target and fire, practice will tell you exactly where you need to shoot in relation to the target. Killzone 2 is possibly a good game as there is little autoaim, and once you get the hang of that game the rest should be pretty simple.

Thanks. Just a quick question. I picked up COD4 and am playing this as well as uncharted. Had a quick blast of the 1st level (on the ship).
Would you recommend playing the single player campaign with or without auto aim. I'm assuming you can't use auto aim for multiplayer and disabling will be better in the long run. Or do I have this wrong and you actually are allowed to use auto aim when playing multiplayer?

Also. I picked up the trigger extenders. Only cost £2.99 from local store. They are a godsend.

I tend to buy FPS and most strategy games on the PC and use my PS3 for fighters, platformers, etc.

I can't be bothered trying to get good with the pad when I can just go upstairs and use the PC.
