havne't done any of this type of thing before, but thought as my pc sits diong nothing most of the day while i'm at work, i might as well put it to some use.

so, 1st things 1st, do i just download the client from the http://setiathome.berkeley.edu website?

2nd, do i need to play with any specific settings before letting it do it's work or just run it, restart and let it have at it!?

3rd, any other advice?

cheers

Hello good sir. SETI is a worthy cause, it will be good to have you on the team. Here are some brief instructions to help you in your new crunching career :D

Download the BOINC client from the website you stated. I would recommend getting an older version. 6.10.60 seems to avoid many problems that the newer versions have. If you are using Win7 64bit then download it here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_6.10.60_windows_x86_64.exe

Once installed you'll need to join the SETI project from within the client and setup a username and password. Once this is done click on the "your preferences" button and join the OCUK team. This is the most important bit  :p

Once this is done you are ready to go, however I'd advise doing one more thing... installing the latest optimised Lunatics app. This will make sure your machine is crunching efficiently. You'll be wanting v0.40 from here http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=9

Then just leave it running for a while so it can download some work and begin crunching.

If you need any help just shout and we will get you up and running in no time.

hi derv,

cheers for the reply, 1 question/problem though....

i had the BOINC client installed and running from the berkeley main website and that was - seemingly - running ok, but after reading your post about possible problems, i uninstalled it and installed the one from your link, but it wont connect to the local host, should i just revert back to the original client i was using?

cheers

EDIT: please ignore, made a whoopsie when installing!! sorted now i think

Don't forget to attach to a backup project for when SETI goes down and has no tasks to hand out.

Attach to one you like the sound of from the list like you did with SETI and then set it to 'No New Tasks'. Otherwise BOINC will attempt to time share between the two projects.

Do a search for the following client:

Boinc 6.10.60 - it's considered one of the best for collecting work.

Also, make sure you get the right one: 32 bit or 64 bit depending on your operating system.

once installed - connect to your project (ie seti) and let it download all required files and start some work. Then you can install the Lunatics Optimised Apps.

Hope this helps.

Edit: My mistake - derv already linked to the right one :D

I don't think that's right. You need to set it to 0% resource share to make it work as a backup project but 'no new tasks' will never get any tasks.

I've not had much luck running backup projects. I added Milkyway as a backup a few months back with 5% share, but because all of the WUs were 'high priority' it crunched those for days on end and SETI didn't get a look in.

Next time I'll give it a try with 0% share and see how that goes.

woah there folks...remember total noooob to this!! 0% share, 5% share = me no understandy!! where do i set this, as i have both seti & milky way on the go and it seems that milky way seems to be doing more than seti.

cheers for all the help, and sorry for my ignorance

Sorry, we went mildly off topic there :D

To change the share click on the project in BOINC and go to 'your preferences', then edit the resource share from there.

If you want Milkyway as a backup project only then set it to 0.

derv, i know i am being a total numpty, but when i do as you say seti is the only one that shows me a 'your preferences' option. when i go to it then i am simple brought to my seti account home page.

maybe i should just delete the milkyway thingy and leave seti on it's own?

might be the easy fix for a noob until i figure out how to work this properly??

Under your account on a project's website there are three types of preferences:

  • Computing preferences
  • Community preferences
  • <project@home> preferences

Of those, it's the last set of preferences you need to change as each one of those is project-specific. Once in there, click the Edit <project@Home> preferences link and change the resource share to the appropriate amount, then click Update preferences. So to change the resource share for milkyway@home, go to the milkyway@home site, go into your account, click on Milkyway@home preferences and change the resource share to 0, then click Update preferences.

Once that's done, you'll need to go into BOINC manager and manually update milkyway@home so that it fetches and uses the new preferences.

ahhhh. damn how did i not see that before...thought i'd been through every option......grrrrrrrrrr, speed reading is clearly not a skill i am good at!!

cheers mate

glad to be a part of something worthwhile.

1 more question though. now that i have changed milkyway sharing, it seem that seti status is continually 'communication deferred' a timer counts to zero then restarts.??

That's normal. All that message means is that BOINC is asking SETI's servers to download more tasks; once a request has been sent communication is automatically deferred for five minutes, after which if BOINC manager thinks that more tasks need to be downloaded it will send another request, which is followed immediately by the 'communciation deferred' message. This will go on until the cache of SETI tasks has been filled, after which no more tasks will be asked for until required.

I don't think that's right. You need to set it to 0% resource share to make it work as a backup project but 'no new tasks' will never get any tasks.

Well, obviously you have to turn work back on again when you've drained the Seti queue to enable the backup project.
Not a solution for a borg or large number of crunchers I grant you but for a single PC I find it easier to manage it myself than let BOINC try and calculate long term debt and all that nonsense.
