New to SLI, second card periodically being recognised, help!

I did use my arctic TIM cleaner on the cards sli cojnector area, maybe that did ig in the end lol. its not exactly as high-pressure connection wise compared to the PCIE slt so maybe if its a bit dirty there is poor contact...

very annoying problem though and yeh one possible fix i came across was to update BIOS and format

You mean the citrus stuff made from oil?

Oh dear lol.

You need to use something alcohol based so it dries with no residue.

If you mean your motherboard's bios? I thought that had already been suggested. Old bioses hate 4 series cards. I know because my 790i was bsodding until I updated the bios when I put my 470 in there.

Looks like ive found the problem. Got home and startup and got one long beep followed by 3 short ones.

Zotac card now makes the PC beep whichever slot its in so seems like its dead :(

The PNY card works great

After reading as much as I can on this issue I am not alone, tends to be Asus motherboards.
There was a guy on the EVGA forums who reckoned on a cold boot the PCI-E capacitors do not get sufficiently charged to power card one and output video.

Sure enough he would seem right, the way I can get my pc to work with SLI enabled is if from cold, turn on the system and expect the black screen, allow to warm for 5 minutes then hold power switch until reset.

Then I get the BIOS flash screen and output all the way to windows and have SLI.

I've only ever used Asus mobos but my confidence in them is shaken after this problem i've been having. The cards themselves are fine.

I also updated to the latest BIOS on the Asus site, there is now an 'auto' setting for as well as the old PCIE/PCI PCI/PCIE setting.

BIOS or this setting has made no difference

I still have the same board as I did then and it seems that the problem definatly was one card was dying/dead.

Ran SLI 480s no problems at all :)
