So I constantly hear about how good SSDs are, but I've never got round to buying one.

Here's the questions.

1) So I currently have a 1tb hard drive with everything on it. When I order an SSD, what's the first thing I should do? Do I install it first? Or do I format my current drive, then install the SSD then windows, etc?

2) 128/256? I don't play an awful lot of games, and I have 1tb for movies and such. I guess to keep the price down I should go with the 128 or is it worth the leap to 256?

3) Which one to get?

Cheers!

you disconnect the 1tb from your pc,connect the ssd install windows to it,once completed connect your 1tb hdd aswell and set the ssd as first boot device in the bios

if your using older motherboard first make sure you set the sata ports to ahci mode in the bios before you do any of the above

you can then decide what to keep/backup/delete of the old 1tb hdd

+1 and get ready for super fast OS loading times :)

it will work fine, you can only boot into one drive/os (just set which one, ideally the new ssd in the bios)

you can decide what to do with the data on the old hdd, backup what you need and delete what you don't ect

Never had any problems with mine. I have a Samsung 830 256Gb in my second system and a Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb in my Laptop.

Apologies for stating the obvious but neither of those is an EVO.

In day to day usage my EVO doesn't exhibit any noticeable problems.

The thread does, however, suggest something isn't quite right so it's worth pointing it out to the OP as the EVO is the drive being recommended.

I have an Evo in my main set up. Never had any problems with it mate.

The Crucial is a beast. The Samsung might be natch quicker but in real terms what does it matter between lighting fast and uber lightning fast. Dont think i've had a loading screen last past a couple of seconds.. and windows loads in what maybe 2.6 seconds.

crucial make good drives at a great price. The guy needs to make his choice.

the crucial mx100 suffers from freezing issues on certain hardware

so the evo or the crucial is far from ideal however its only a few rare cases

personally I think the mx100 offers best value for money, jury's still out on the bizarre evo performance, lets hope its a simple fw fix as Samsung have a great hdd/ssd rep

My EVO doesn't show any problems in day to day usage but the benchmarks do show something odd going on.

I see that you haven't posted anything in the thread I linked. It would be helpful for you to run the benchmarks and post the results so that they can be added to the evidence for or against there being a problem.

It's possible the firmware version might be a factor so it would be helpful if you state if you're on the latest firmware or, if not, what version you have.

I can only really recommend what I have used and the Crucial drives seem to be very good and for £79 for the Crucial MX100 256GB that seems to be a fantastic price for an SSD

also if your MB is a bit older there is always a chance that an SSD might have a few issues so check and see if there has been a bios update that is related to SSD's my board is not to old so I didn't have any issues running an SSD.

Decided to grab a Samsung 840 EVO 120gb since it was only £53.

Last question.

After I install windows on ssd and after plugging in current hdd, do I need to install drivers? Eg: motherboard, graphics, etc.

only if you want to,windows will install all needed drivers

can install the intel rapid storage drivers though
