Right chaps/chapesses, first time here and hoping for some advice on a new build I am researching......I bruise easily, so be gentle with a 70 year old git. :D

This could be long, so settle down and try not to shout abuse, or fall asleep.
I currently run my X58 (see below) PC with Vista Ult. 64bit (yeah I like it), Win 8.1, Win 7 and Win 10.
All on separate HDD's and all cloned on to separate HDD's as backups.
Vista or Win 7 can do a couple of things that Win10 can't.
Yes, I am weird. :D

I currently have my X58 system which I built in 2008 and threw all the money I could at building it, plus a bit of creative accounting to fool the wife with :D

Tt Armor+ case
Corsair HX1000W - had to RMA it after couple of years for HX1050.
Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme.
Intel i7 -920 (stock speeds)
Noctua cpu cooler.
Gigabyte 6870OC X 2 in CF (was Radeon 4870X2's but one died)
6 x 1GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 triple channel.
2 x WD 5000GB Velociraptors, and a few other HDD's.
Dell 24" 2408WFP and Samsung 22" monitors.
Plus the usual other bits.

I use my PC for normal stuff, and gaming which lately is World of Tanks.
So it cost me a bit......now that waffle is over this is what I am intending to put together.
The X58 will remain as a complete working set up.

Phanteks Primo or Luxe case.
Gigabyte Z170 G1 board.
Intel Core i7-6700K
Corsair H115i AIO water cooler or Noctua D15.
Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB - 3200Mhz - 16GB memory.
EVGA GTX980Ti Superclocked+ ACX 2.0.
Intel 750 400GB NVMe OS drive.
Samsung 950 pro 256gb nvme M.2
WD Elements 2.0TB usb3
Samsung Optical DVD writer (yes I still have a need for one)

Headset: senheiser pc310
Keyboard: Corsair K40
Mouse: corsair M65 mouse
Mouse mat: CM storm

Main: 27" dell 144hz monitor
Secondary: 24" dell 1920x1200

Now, I think I am fixed on the Phanteks case, Gigabyte board, PSU, and GFX card.

The rest of the components I am up for advice one....bearing in mind that I play WoT, plus many older games, BF3 (and others from that series) Unreal Tournament etc....othewise, just day to day stuff.

But, at 70 years I want to build a new rig which should see me out. :D
The money I threw at the X58 system has done, and still does me well, but I have a small(ish) inheritance coming my way soon, and just have that terrible itch, especially when looking through all the goodies on display at 'overclockers.uk'.

I have not built one since 2008, so I am way out of touch.

I did wonder about upgrading my X58 system, but since it is now coming up for 8 years old, I am not sure how much longer it will last.
Not showing any signs of wear at the moment, but, I will have the money for a completely new system....possible budget £3,000-3,500.

Maybe I could do both ! :D

That board is still fine. There's not a massive difference between that Xeon overclocked and 6700k in gaming.

Them chips can be had for £50 on auction sites.

But if you really want a shiny new PC the I would get a 5820k (haswell) not a 6700k (skylake)
 
Yep my X58 is still a keeper, but don't know its life left.

But the force is too strong not to buy a complete new PC, and the fun of building it and pressing the power button for the first time. :)

Just checked on ebay and see that I could buy an i7 980 for £200, or a 950 for £49.00. Plus Xeons for decent prices too.

But would an Xeon work on the lga1366 socket ?

For the 5820K, I would then have to research again for X99 boards, which I would probably pick Gigabyte again: X99-Gaming 5P Intel X99 at near enough half the price of the G1 board.

But thanks again for the extra choices I now have to worry about. :D

Yeah. Check that thread. Lots of people are getting them Xeon CPUs and over clocking them to 4ghz+

The 950 is pointless upgrade and the 980 is basicly the same as a x5650

But that G1 gaming board keeps putting voices in my head....
 
No problem. I'm not that up on the newest tech so it's better left for someone else to recommend some parts but with the newer games using more CPU cores the Xeon or the haswell CPU is the way to go.

Also if you can hold out a little longer there's some new GPUs coming out.
 
Yes, I have vaguely heard of Pascal GPU's, but by the time they arrive on the scene, I probably won't have the money left to buy one. :(

Well, just ordered new parts for my computer build for £3,151.61. :D :cool:
Unfortunately 3 parts were not in stock, so I had to turn traitor and order about £400.00 of parts from elsewhere....sorry about that. :o

Still, I now have a room full of boxes, and hopefully the treasury at Overclockers is looking healthy now. :)

4 x 140mm and 8 x 120mm PWM fans - some will get used in my X58 case.
Plus a couple of other bits..

I had to buy the Corsair AX860i, Corsair Individually Sleeved PSU cables, Corsair K40 keyboard, and Corsair H115i AIO cpu cooler elsewhere, as they were out of stock here.

I think that's about it, and that lot kept the Courier busy this afternoon. :)

That's quite a beast of a system you're building there, should serve you very well for a long time to come. Let us know how the build goes.

Only suggestion I would make is to buy another two sticks of matching ram now. 16GB is absolutely fine, but 32GB will make your system even more future-proof. It's always hard to find matching memory years down the road, so get it now while you can and while prices are cheap.
 
As above you chose very well! An i7-6700K + 980 Ti is a great combination.

The PSU is a bit overkill and that thermal paste is a rip off but I'm just nitpicking.

I wouldn't bother buying more RAM now as prices can go up or down and you might never need it. 16 GB is already ample.
 
Yep, I figured 2 sticks for 16GB would be plenty for me.
Also the PSU is a bit over kill, but I may get the urge to fit another 980Ti, but probably won't. :D

I do have some AS5 from about 2008, but figured it was worthwhile getting a small tube of some fancy stuff. :D

I have also already downloaded all the latest drivers and BIOS, plus a manual, and just waiting for the box of fans to turn up, so that I can get on with things.
