New to the UK

G'day ;P Moved here from Hobart in May 2007 myself, and have had a bit of time to find answers to similar questions :)

Can't help you on the trance front (I prefer my doof with harsh vocals, www.slimelight.net), but the best website I've found for metal gigs is www.metalstorm.ee. It's not London/UK-centric but has a lot of good stuff listed.

Try this search.

Also, the underworld in camden has a lot of stuff happening, from a lot of bands I have no idea about. Unfortunately they flash-ised their website, it was a lot better before when it was just text ;(

Dunno where you are in London, but for something more SW instead of north, there's the ramshackle in fulham. never actually been there myself but I think it tends to have a few live acts fairly regularly. There's also the halfmoon in putney which seems to have fairly regular gigs. Haven't been there either, they were just the closest I could find to metal-ish/original music in SW london :(

Then my Australian friend has mis-led me.

Yes.

Ferals are hippy types who like to live in grubby communes, wear home made clothes with dreadlocks, get all eco-friendly, and smoke a lot of dope. Wikipedia has more info here. Ferals hang out in places like Nimbin.

Bogans are a working class subculture known for their love of big, powerful cars (Holden Commodore V8; Holden Torana SLR; Ford Falcon V8; Holden Kingswood, etc.), their classic uniform of tight black jeans or blue shorts with Adidas Romes/desert boots/rubber thongs, a blue singlet and/or a flannelette shirt, their addiction to beer cigarettes, and their fondness for the "mullet" hairstyle.

Bogans listen to metal or pub rock; for example: AC/DC, Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, and Midnight Oil.

Unlike chavs, bogans are rarely violent, usually employed (typically as tradesmen or labourers) and not into bling, shell suits, baseball caps, gold rings, or necklaces.

London and the UK in general is a lovely place, the county has so much history you tend to forget this when you are brought up here, but go to somewhere like Aus, USA etc and you will see the difference between buildings and architecture, Haven’t being down to London in ages and would love to visit soon just to see the sights, I enjoy seeing old stuff like the tower bridge, big Ben, Buckingham palace etc, I suppose if you are brought up or live around London I suppose you can get fed up of seeing the same thing day in day out.
