Hi all,

As the title says, I`m a complete novice to wireless networking and need some help with a question I have. Any help please, would be gratefully appreciated.

Q1: I currently have my desktop PC in the front room but due to the g/f i`m being forced to move the comp to the hallway. Problem is, I have the cable modem located in the front room and no way of moving it closer to the PC.

So the question is, what do I need/do to be able to be connected to the internet and please my g/f?

Info:
Telewest Blueyonder - ISP
Motorola SURFboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem w/ usb and ethernet connections

Thankyou in advance for any help :)

Get yourself a Wireless router. Something like the

D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DI-624/S Wireless Router (NW-035-DL)

And wireless PCI adapter

Belkin F5D7000UK 802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter (NW-007-BE)

Configuration is pretty simple, the modem plugs into the WAN port on your router and the PCI adapter you just need to install and configure. Then its just a case of setting up the connection (normally done automatically through windows) the next step would be to sort the security using WEP :)

Some routers normally comes with a CD that auto sets up your hardware which makes things a little easier. Forgot to mention that you can leave the modem where it is and just have the router next to it or hidden somewhere.

Thanks Shilz for the advice :)

Do you think I could use this one below, instead of the one you suggested.

Belkin 802.11g Wireless Cable/DSL Internet Gateway Router

Thanks again

she's easily pleased if moving a PC is all she wants.

I'd advise against the belkin, they're a bit hit and miss for reliability or indeed if it'll work at all. For cable routers i'd look at Linksys. The newer ones are supporting WPA2 and WMM security now too which is a big bonus if your on a capped connection.

I have the WRT54GS which for wired connections is litterally plug and play, as in you plug both ends in then the power and off it goes and routes its little ass off. Wireless works also as default but unsecured which you don't want, and you can't configure it via wireless to begin with. But the auto connecting for wired is great cos if your like my GF then you can get someone like me to VNC/RD in and set it up for you :)

If you cant use run a real ethernet cable from the cable modem, run a virtual one using homeplug adapters to take the ethernet connection to your PC via the mains wiring.

Homeplug could be as easy as opening the box, plugging 2 units into mains sockets & connecting ethernet patch cables to both modem and to PC.

Very simple and reliable. None of the hassle of setting up a router and wireless security.

Cost for 2 adapters suitable for internet sharing would be less than router and wireless card.
