New Tower Build -Spec Advise

Hello all,

I'm looking to get myself a new PC (tower only) for general use and the odd bit of gaming, but have not been in the loop of new computer parts for a while now and am not sure what is the best bang for my buck.

I would be looking to spend around £400-£500.

Any help would be much appreciated in spec'ing me a computer system based on components or suggesting a pre-build system from OC-UK which you think would be suitable.

Obviously I would like the best PC for my money, and would like the ability to play some of the new PC games out if possible.:D

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Mofish

Thanks for the quick reply stulid, I will take a look into these parts you suggested.

Will this manage to run some of the latest games etc?

Much appreciated,

yes it will easily, but here are the builds again with a 500Gb hardrive, made a slight booboo with speccing a 1TB drive, the prices are now a lot more keen.

I noticed on these bottom builds you used on one a GeForce GTX 460 and the other a XFX ATI Radeon HD 5830 1024MB. Are these just options available? Which of these bottom two specs would you suggest?

Is the following your latest one? ie the one you suggest?

Thanks Stulid!

Heres a comparison of 5830 vs GTX460 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/171?vs=156

It use to be 5770 vs GTX460 but now the price of the 5830 is the same as a 5770 its a no brainer(comparing 5830 vs 5770)

The very last build above without win7 is now at its best optimal selection (have changed the case and a psu with two PCI-E connectors)

Thanks for all your help Stulid.

Just to clarify before proceeding, this is the final list we decided on..

two 5770 in crossfire are as good as a 5870.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd5770-hd5750-crossfirex.html

A 5870 vs GTX460 768mb - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/162?vs=156

but to get the price down have had to swap the cpu - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/188?vs=88

I wouldn't say an Athlon II is suitable to run Crossfire.

The 500W PSU in the bundle should be enough to power the CF set-up, so would it be better to do that and combine above build with a Phenom II

Last edited:
what makes you say that? the chipset on the motherboard controls all the pci-e lanes.

Well, seeing as a Phenom II X4 can be a bottleneck for high-mid/high graphics cards in CrossFire I imagine a Athlon II X4 would be a bottleneck for Crossfire mid range graphics.

Feel free to correct me, I actually want to be wrong about this :D

simple, it will play games and will last a long time before needing upgrade AMD X6
