i looked at the drobo then went synology to be honest..
to be honest i dont see the point of the drobo "raid", if you have a hard drive fail you swap it out asap and you should be having a backup dataset anyway.. so why would you need to get to the stage where youre running more than 1 failed drive. unless youre REALLY unlucky.
(in my opinion of course)

True. I like way it deals with multiple disks of dfferent size. It doesn't default to the smallest dsk size for raid. Synology DSM 3.0 has this hybrid RAID feature as well by the looks of tihngs.
I'll probably try to sort out a NAS from stuff I already have. I've got two machines Iuse at the moment:
A "server" with an AMD Opteron 165, 2GB RAM, Windows Server 2008 with a 400GB, 750GB and two 1TB drives in it.
A gaming\photo rig with a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz, 8GB RAM, GTX295, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, 500GB, three 1TB and two 2TB drives in it. Watercooled and apart from adding storage a couple of years old now.
So a fair bit of storage, nothing running RAID I just currently handle backing up to different physical disks\machines manually. I've also got a handful of smaller SATA disks that I backup to via an external USB interface. I'm looking at getting a laptop as my main machine, then I'll use the PC70 case from the gaming rig to build a server, probably using the Q6600 undervolted or something.
It's actually Network Accessible Storage
Are you quite sure it isn't Network Attached Storage? Just asking....

Why i chose the Drobo
1 - it is hot swap
2 - gigabit LAN
3 - can take ANY Sata HD, any size in any combination
4 - up to 2 disk fail and STILL work
5 - easy to set up, instructions are plug in HD, plug in cable, power up.
6 - expand as you grow, just take out the smallest drive and replace eith larger one
I have never heard of other NAS system that does all the above, especially the part whe it is that simple to set up. Trust me, i know nothing about NAS, i don't even know what NAS stands for!

I have a 4TB WD Sharespace and it doesn't have many fancy features, but it runs RAID5 and keeps all my pron... No wait, photos all neat and tidy! Not to mention the 2.5 terabytes of other bits 'n' bobs
Yes, but the Drobo box looks prettier. He has an iMac after all, don't want ugly gear near it!
We also have one, and it's working overtime!
Has 2x2GB and 2x1GB drives in at the mo, although we will probably have to swap the 1GB's out next year!
Fool proof to use and yes its very pretty! Wouldn't run the business without it.
