Article on the BBC today saying about the new police powers to ticket people for middle lane hogging and driving too close to people that come into day, which is all good stuff and not before time, but there's one that concerns me as a motorcyclist.

I wonder if this is going to affect filtering, lets face it you could get different interpretations from different cops, and the one below is also something to ponder. I suppose we'll see what happens.

edit: I just noticed the date on the news article is last year but it's on the current news list.

As a bike you don't push into the queue though. Also I wouldn't worry about it, it's already illegal in places like Australia but they still filter. I don't think we have cameras that can detect illegal driving yet other than speed and red lights!

A always overtake and push in the Queue, can't see the new laws affecting bikers much, pretty much the norm on a bike

Does this mean idiots who drive all the way to the end of a merge when the road ahead is clear and then push in will get a ticket. About time as they get 100's yards to move over.

This.
The main reason that 10's of millions of £'s and years of delays is going on at the moment on the M6/A14 junction. If you have never driven this section of the M6, i'll explain. A 3 lane M6 changes to an inside lane dedicated slip road for the A14 a mile and a half before the turn itself, with the other 2 lanes being the M6. It needs to be that mile and half because it's a very busy junction. Instead of joining the inside lane to turn off, the dickheads and idiots carry on in the central lane then have to slow to a crawl trying to push in at the end. This makes that section of the M6 one of the most dangerous stretches of motorway anywhere, because 70/80mph traffic is suddenly confronted by a "turd" doing 4mph trying to queue jump so also now reducing the M6 to one lane. The quicker these idiots are done, fined and banned for dangerous driving the better. Needless to say, loads of people have been killed because of this over the years, hence the delays and money being spent that's going on now.

Book motorcyclists who speed in between cars to reach the front ready for a green light.

It's called filtering, and is perfectly fine if done in a safe and controlled manner.

It makes less traffic for everyone else on the road and allows the motorcycle to get off the line and up to speed in the fraction of a time of the car traffic also waiting.

As for the new offence. Doubt it will be used for motorcyclists filtering appropriately. It't not pushing, it's filtering.

Read what i said. "Speed"

I know its ok to filter. Its the guys who 'speed' between the cars with no thought!

Davis v Schrogin, anyone?

There is no mention of filtering so I cannot see this affecting things as they are now, filtering is perfectly legal as long as it is done safely.

Not that you will ever win a legal case if you filter past a large vehicle/thing, that is not safe. You must be able to see whatever is in front of what you are filtering.

i don't have a problem with speeding when filtering, you can only go so fast safely anyway in such narrow gaps

aslong as they don't take your car mirrors out or put a big scrape down the side of your car then its fine in my books

They are doing it the way the Highway Code suggests, unlike the idiots who queue for miles, or straddle both lanes.

Part of me wants to see crap driving stamped on, but a bigger part worries about more tickets being handed out for actions which are somewhat subjective and aren't likely to need hard evidence to prove (e.g. a police officers opinion).

If all the above naughtiness needs to be caught on video before a ticket can be issued then fine.

Exactly, it's called merge in turn. If everyone did it it would speed up all the queues.

This isn't a merge in turn scenario. It is a single lane turn off and two going straight on. The queue is the single lane turn off and idiots drive up the two other lanes past the queue and then try and push into the queue. Get it all the time on the one way in Greenwich.

This pretty much.

I hate it though when there is a queue before the exit has been sign posted, how are you supposed to merge in that scenario? Obviously everyone that has driven the route before got in lane already and everyone just assumes you're being a ....
