New TV for PS3 or new PC? What would you do?

Hellooooo

Well I'm never gonna get into the MM unless I start posts like this, so here goes. Here's my situation: been out of PC gaming for a good few years now for various reasons including serious ones like marriage and house renovation . Stopped at around HL2 with my current rig - Athlon 64 3700, 2GB, GF 6800 PRO. Was awesome.

Would really like to update the rig and play some PC games again - see what this Crysis fuss is all about etc etc. In fact the original reason I joined here was to get up to speed on hardware etc.

However, in the meantime I've picked up a PS3 and a Wii for some GTA IV, GH, GT5 etc etc. Only thing is, this is currently running on my ancient 28" SD CRT TV . GTA IV doesn't look much better than the PS2 games on this!

For about the same money as the proposed PC build, I could get a nice 42" Plasma TV - Panasonic G10/G20 and properly max out the PS3 experience. Also get into some blu rays too.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??

So what would you guys do - TV or PC? What do you think I'd get most enjoyment from?

Cheers,

Liam

I went for a Panasonic 42G10 recently. I used to be a full PC gamer (my machine is very similar to yours), and I'm far too casual a gamer now and can't be bothered with it these days, so I'd always pick a nice big TV over an upgrade personally. I run my PS3 and 360 on the TV and they look great. I've upgraded for games before, and I've always ended up disappointed in the end (I know crysis is a bit hit and miss too). Blu-Rays look great on the TV too.

I always think asking something about PC or console in the console section is just asking for a biased answer :p

Anyway, get the new PC. You won't be dissapointed with all the games that are out (and im talking games, not tech demos)

Well I did ask in the PC section as well for balance :). Not as one-sided as i thought it might be in either section!

Tough decision though. I'm a fairly casual gamer nowadays so maybe would get more out of the TV. GT5 may actually be released one day and that is a big reason for having a decent TV. On the other hand I miss having a decent PC and do love my shooters, and absolutely can't get by playing them with no keyboard/mouse! On the other hand the TV gets use of my hifi/speakers.

Getting both right now isn't really an option. I'd have to compromise on both and neither would be what I want. Having said that both will happen eventually, say one now and one next year, so it's a question of what first.

Well I appreciate the comments - cheers. Will carry on thinking....

I would say go for the tele.

Though you have not stated how much you are looking to spend. This might make it a little easier to make a proper recommendation.

And as for FPS games on controller, it really does just take some getting used to. If you played one good FPs game all the way through with a controller, by the end you'd be used to it.

I have all platforms, so am not biased in any way. But having been a PC gamer most of my life and couple of years ago getting consoles for the first time, I have found that I tend to enjoy games a bit more on console. Probably because the PC encourages me to fiddle, adn so often spend less time playing and mroe time fiddling. With console, I stick the game in and all I can do is play :D

If I had to choose I would say TV. I reckon you will get a lot more out of it. PS3 games will look much better + you'll be able to watch Blu-Ray and HD content aswell as just being able to enjoy TV on a much larger screen.

But,

It is possible to do both I reckon. If you source second hand computer parts (you don't need the best to play Crysis anymore), you'll be able to afford both if you downgrade the TV a little or save a little extra.

Keep your SD tv for regular old telly, get a good sized monitor for the pc and hook the ps3 up to that (make sure it's HDMI)

So either a 24" or 26" monitor (cough BenQ), then spend the rest of the budget on upgrading the pc.

That's probably what I'd do in your situation, but it depends on whether you use your PS3 for online gaming or ****ing about on splitscreen, also whether you would want to use headphones could make a difference as well if you don't want to buy extra speakers.

You can do both, you don't need the best PC in the world to make the most of PC games.

Somthing like a phenom quad, 4gb ram, and a 5850 would do the trick. And a 32 inch TV.

If you don't have a good pc, I gaurentee(sp) will regret it. And if you don't have a PC you'll be oogling at how good demon souls, final fantasy and uncharted 2 look on the ps3.

Well I was going to say get the TV anyway but after you said that I would definitely say get the TV. A well chosen TV today won't be superseded much in 12 months, whereas .....

Crysis was largely rubbish and still runs like a dog. Crysis warhead is better optimised but still needs ££££ worth of graphics grunt.

Crysis 2 is coming oout on console so I would buy a new TV.

News just in: Apparently we have won a £1000 pre-paid credit card from this McDonalds Monopoly thing going on. Hmmm well I'll believe that when I see it, but if it turns out to be legit, that just might sort the telly if I can put up a good case for it! :)

Well we'll see. In the meantime thanks for the comments - some good points to consider. Cheers,

Liam

If the TV will become the main one in the house in the living room, then personally I would go for that, especially if you have the space real estate for a huge one and then probably other extras like AV recievers and sound systems. I'd prefer the luxury of a big screen TV and/or Home Cinema Entertainment system for not only yourself but the Mrs and anyone else can enjoy than a new PC anyday. And as you hinted that you may get both eventually, then get the TV first. They will last you much longer than a PC would what with all the hardware updates every few months.
