New TV just came, mirai DTL-632V200, but the picture looks terrible. I thought it might of just been a bad signal with terrestrial tv, so got the ps2, and plugged it in via component AV, and played a DVD. Yet still the picture is terrible. It almost looks the same as when a PC monitor is running in 800x600.

Any ideas?

This is actually what the picture looks like, not just a **** photo

See the ghosting on the nose & eyes, also just generally terrible picture.

Does a PS2 output Component video or is it composite/Pal?

A composite signal will look poor on an HD Ready TV.

Is your terrestrial signal analogue or digital?

Are some channels better then others?

Can you feed it VGA from a PC or Laptop to see how it performs with a decent source.

Without an HD source the best test you can give it is to feed it via RGB Scart, maybe from a DVD player.

Terrestrial signal is analogue im guessing? Just using a normal co-axial plug.

Channel 1, 2, 3, 4 are all the same quality.

Not at the moment no, gfx card is DVI, TV is VGA/HDMI, hoping to get a lead tomorrow.

I have a dvd player down stairs, component to component though.

Im having my sky+ installed on wednesday...will see what they say.

Your cable is composite video.

Sky + should be OK connected via RGB Scart. There will still be some channels that are better than others. BBC 1 is very good, ITV is crap.

For a non HD source you need to sit a few feet away from the set or you will see all the imperfections.

Just got hold of a vga to vga cable and have the PC hooked up to the TV. Running at 1280x768 60hertz it looks amazing. Does this change your view david?

Seems that your TV is fine. Download some HD content and then you will be amased.

Don't expect too much from a non HD sources and don't sit too close when watching SD material.

So will sky TV look "normal"? Terrestrial tv is unwatchable, and the feed coming from my PS2 is the same. And i use that as my dvd player. What lead will i need to get for my PS2 to work properly?

RGB Scart or Component cable for the PS2 however triggerthat seems to have issues with component output.

Remember that with the PS2 the TV has to up-scale 576 horizontal lines to 768 so some loss of picture quality is to be expected.

Sky will be fine, but again you have 576 lines being up-scaled to 768 so you will see some artefacts/defects if you are too close to the set.

Bit rates on satellite TV vary and picture quality will vary with the broadcast bit rate. Hence:

BBC 1 - High bit rate = Good picture
ITV 1 - Lower bit rate = Crap picture ( and a lot of 4:3 format football  )

Sky HD can be superb but again the mileage does vary with bit rate.
