I'm going to be moving soon, and feel it's time for a new TV. I think 37" is a reasonable size, and it'll be hooked up to a PS3, so, I'd like 1080p.

Budget around £5-600...

I don't care lcd/plasma - as long as it does a good job of sd freeview/dvd and hd etc.

So what's hot at the moment?

42 Panasonic PX80 at a touch over £600, or can. get the 37 in the 500s

Tt isn't 1080p but probably won't matter, but how far will you be sitting from the set ?

No idea yet, but probably not far - maybe 2-3m, hence only 37". I just want something 100% future-proof (for a while :p) so 1080p....?

O jesus, everyone quoteing 1080p for being futureproof :D

1080p doesn't suddenly make the PQ better on a tv and as I always say is just the cherry ontop of the cake. PQ is made up of many other important factors ilke the panel used, video processing, adjustment options.

you say that you want it for PS3 but also for SD and films, what percentage will you be splitting your usage up into ?

I still say the panasonic PX80 as the 1080p version is up towards 800 and has worse SD performance. the PX80 will look damn awesome with a HD feed even though the max it can handle is 720p. I had a 720p pioneer and although it was the most expensive 42 out there it was better than any other 1080p plasma or LCD I had seen.

Do you mind if I quote that in my sig? ;)

£600 is a good price for the TV. I've occasionally seen it cheaper, but the price fluctuates quite often.

 I thought you edited me in your quote, but realised that I actually typed that. I'm dirty even when I'm recommending tv sizes. Go ahead and use it if you please :D

jdickerson, it's a stunning price for a tv this good. If I couldn't poosibly have afforded my Kuro, I would have gone for PX80, it offers just soo much for your money. The PZ is good with its 1080p, but at 200 more for a tiny bit of extra detail, and worse SD freeview viewing, I have a real softspot for the PX80.

Cool - I'll order it towards the end of the month. Now... to find a new apartment to match my tv :) (literally).

Right, bit of a thread revival as I've finally got round to buying the 42PX80B. I hope the set is still one of the best in my price range?

Also, cheapest I've found is £630 from a supermarket. Is that the best?

If I were getting a new TV I wouldn't look anywhere other than a Sammy ;)

No real reason just like the design of them :)

I'd only buy a LCD if I were doing lots of gaming, using it as a PC monitor for a while, in a apartment (no curtains)

LCD can be good, but plasma does do a better job with video material, especially xvid. From the HTPC even with processing disabled there was some blocking on the LCD, not much but plasma copes better.

Hmmm.... I reckon the vast majority of use is going to be freeview, then dvd on ps3, then games on the ps3 - but rarely. Probably best sticking with the plasma idea then.
