Hi guys was wondering if anyone could offer some advice. I don't know a great deal about tv's but need a new one and was speaking to the salesman at currys yesterday.

The one he's got us looking at is the Samsung Ue40d8000 which does look nice but I'm unsure if the whole 3d thing is just a gimmick and wonder how often I'd actually use it.

I asked for a Samsung without 3d and he showed us the Ue32d5000 although it would be the 40" version.

Your looking at almost half the price so a big difference. My main criteria is simply picture quality, and the guy reckons the picture in the expensive one is 8x better. Couldn't quite see anything like 8x but did look better, though unsure if it's worth another £500.

Anyone got experience with any of these models?

Take anything the Currys guy tells you with a pinch of salt. Head over to AV forums for impartial advice and then keep an eye out for bargains that include 5 year warranty. :)

Totally agree there,Currys staff can barely tie their shoe laces let alone recommend a decent panel.
I would also suggest auditioning a Panasonic set,it will be miles better in the picture quality department than the Samsung.
I've owned a couple of Samsungs and they are very poorly made...a bit like buying what you think is going to be a prime steak pie...then finding out its been made with dog meat!!

I've always thought that with Samsung tellies. It's why I've never bought one.

Panasonic telly would be my choice too.

In fact this one.

I don't believe in all this smart telly nonsense. Just more to go wrong TBH. I just want a telly to be a telly. I don't want to be able to surf the web on my telly etc. I've got a PC for that thanks.

Personally I've never had any issues with any of the Samsung TV's I've had.

OP, go and read up and ask on AVForums, here unless you buy a Panasonic TV people will say you have bought the wrong thing.

Samsung D8000 suffers in 3D with a lot of judder. Sports suffer the worse with this. You can reduce it, by turning down processing. However why pay all that money to turn off/down the effects? Plasma Panasonics are not fault free. Green blobs are still a problem despite recent firmware. LG use passive 3D, but a number of sets are not full HD in 3D. My advice is wait for 2012 models and see if they raise the bar.
