Wish i was in a Ramen Shop Counter
Did my car's 20k service today, but front right tyre is down to 3mm, the rest are fine. So might as well change the front two.

The tyre size i need is 205/45/17 W

The dealer (yes, I went to Toyota Dealer :p) quoted me £166 for these each, fitted.

http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/tyredetails.aspx?code=2054517BR1W

alternatively, some brand call Federal for £88 each

He also said if I can get a local indy to give me a quote on the type, they will match it. I can't argue with that. Since they don't stock those tyres, it needs to be ordered in so I am guessing they can order in pretty much any tyre.

What should I be getting, since cost isn't an issue if they will price match an indy, it gives me no reason to go to an indy in this case.

It's a shopping trolley with a 0-60mph at 9 seconds! :p

and I'll ask about the CS3, will give them the kwik fit price, they they come back and say they can't order them in then I could just go to an indy.

Thanks all :)

I don't buy that for most situations, it's a small, light car with I guess 100bhp? You're not as likely to get it close to a tyres set of traction or grip than a performance car. And generalising, you're not going to drive it in the same manner either.

So why blow £150 a corner on CS3s?

133Bhp :p

Well, how many miles does a set of gyres last? 10k? 15k?

I do about 5k miles a year. I have done 300miles so far since I got the car but it's only because 100 of that I spent driving it home from Cardiff so I am on course for 5k a year.

On that estimate, £300 (or for the sake of argument, £600 for 4), that will last me 3 years. So £200 a year for tires is not that bad, I spend roughly that that on shoes/trainers a year!

Well, it seems if i pick something myself. the choices are

Falken Ziex ZE-912 - £80 each, and I can just about afford to replace the entire car in 1 go for £320

Continental Sport Contact 3 - £130 each, I will have to drive my current set of tyres for a few more weeks until the next pay cheque (after this one) before I can replace all 4, unless I do fronts now, and rears before the winter. I'd like the same on front and back personally (a little OCD :p).

Seriously get the full set that you can afford, and good on you for spending a couple quid on tyres.

For the miles I do, it could very well last me 3 years easily. My sister did 30k on her Continental Eco in 2 years and when she sold the car it still had like 5mm left in them.

I know you live near Cardiff as that is where the car was, but how close are you? as Valley Tyres in Pontypridd will be by far the cheapest, and do a good job, i have tyres fitted from them, and they beat internet prices at their first quote. I too go for Continental.

I am no where near there, I did buy the car in Cardiff though.

Be aware that any sporty performance tyre will wear much faster compared to a tyre such as the continental Eco.

I realise that, but she did 30k in 2 years as she commute to work. I am expecting 50% of the longevity of the eco tyres at most, so I don't think that is too high an expectation.

What tyres are currently on the car? Something to bear in mind is that it's typically advisable to have the worst pair of tyres on the front of a FWD car, but if you aren't going to be driving it like that for a while I would wait.

In fact, as you've 3mm left on the tyre, I would wait until you actually want to/can afford to replace all four. You realise the legal limit is 1.6mm?

It has one Pirelli Zero, 2 Continental and 1 Toyo or something...

The 2 Continentals are front right and rear left...I think someone must have swapped them round at some point or replaced them by odds. Hence I think i am going to change all 4 at once so I don't have 2 different tyres at the back.

Yeah, 1.6 is the legal so I got a while before I "had" to replace them. 3 of the tyres have 6mm thread in them so they have loads of life left still.

While I admire your quest for matching tyres I am struggling to come to terms with the idea of replacing 3 tyres with 6mm of tread and 1 tyre with 3mm of tread :D

Hence I at the start i said i replace the fronts, then the rear later, i.e. 6 months from now, before the winter.

So you are going to dump them?

Sorry, got them mixed up, 2 Pirelli, 1 Conti

So here is the worksheet...advice?

If I do flog them on ebay, what are the process? Surely people don't expect them to be posted! how much they go for? I have no idea of these things! It's a Tyre ! lol

Yes, I know about the floor mats, they tried to flog me Toyota ones for £56...no i didn't bite, so I got some Official Toyota Yaris ones for £9 off ebay :D

Whatever you decide, take a look on blackcircles.com or etyres.co.uk, prices are good and include fitting. Can even get mobile tyre fitting if you are in a pinch.

Cheers mate, will certainly put that price to my dealer and get them to price match it. They actually said there's lots of room to negotiate on the tyres.

One thing I do hope with a set of identical gyres is to minimise tyre noise, I dunno if it's because they are different or one is on 3mm, at about 50mph+ on A roads, there's quite a bit of tyre noise, compare to say...my sister's 1 series or dad's A6. Not an accurate scientific comparison as there are lots of variables but just what I notice.

Actually, thinking about it, if I get the cheaper tyres, the £300 (quoted £395 fitted by dealer) saved can get me parking sensors...which will be more useful in the log run. Hmmmm decisions decisions!
