New Tyres

Hello

my 1.4 golf went in for its service and they've advised it needs 1 new front, the other needs replacing shortly and one of the backs has a nail in it.

I've wrote down what the tyrees say which is 225 zr 40 18.

Presuming the Z is the speed rating do i need that high of speed rating? They're r32 replica's or real (no idea which) so guess are meant for a car that can do 140+ given that my car i doubt will go much over a 100 do i need this speed rated tyres? Or is there more to it than that?

What do i do about the nail?

Any recommendations on what tyres to get? A lot to choose from, its normally used for the mrs commute to work which is a few miles on 30/40mph roads with the occasional trip on the motorway.

Toyo T1R's are good mid range tyres, depends how much you want spend.

You could get tyre repaired where nail is, but probably not worth it if tyre isn't far of due for replacement.
 
Think i got my alfa romeo tyres thorugh blackcircles before and had no issues so will use them again :)
Any idea if their tyre ratings are right?
Kumho Ecsta Le Sport KU39 at £106 fitted get better rating than bridgestones Potenza S001 at £117 fitted which is confusing.
 
I'd personally get some Goodyear Eagle F1's but they're £110 each. Going cheaper I've used Falken FK452's which were ok but not as good as the old F1's. A friend has Nexen N6000's (£65) on a 523i which seem ok and I used some Nankang NS2's (£53) on an old Volvo 940 se turbo (the car cost £200) I had and they seemed good enough to cope with 170bhp and stopped well enough.

Had a look in the manual and i cannot see anything about the speed.

The Goodyear Eagle F1's 's are £20 extra a tire, will grab 2 of them and then get the same garage to check the rears.
 
Gotta love R32 wheels on a 1.4 Golf :D Yes they may look good but (and granted the OP bought the car with them on so this isn't directed at him) are they really worth the hundreds of pounds to buy and then the added cost of tyres and worse ride comfort for slightly improved handling.. in a 1.4 Golf, of all things?!

Good tyre choice. I very much doubt speed rating will be an issue - do Goodyear even do Eagle F1s in less than an H? :p

I like the wheels as they look ace, although would rather it had normal golf wheels (15's?) and save a load on tyres! As for the ride i quite like it, i had a clio 1.1 before this and it felt like it would tip over when cornering at any speed, least this feels a little more rooted.

Yeah I think 15s and 16s are the usual standard wheels. I wouldn't have thought the wheel size would affect the body roll though, that's more the suspension - more the level of grip around corners, and the comfort (bigger wheels means less rubber between the car and the road, so less vibrations absorbed).
 
S is 112mph from memory
H 130mph
V 151? mph

You only need a tyre that will cover the max for your car. Its an MOT check, wierd since the max speed in the UK is 70, even 112 seems a bit OTT
I'm sure the legislation must hark back to the un-speed regulated motorways

Get some standard wheels off ebay and sell your R32 wheels then :)
