Hi all,

I have the below planned for the upgrade , my budget is £1200. No need for /SSD/Display/KB/Mouse/WIN10 - I will butcher my Old PC and reuse accordingly.

WIN10 is on my current SSD - so I assume I can plug straight into the new setup and use the WIN10 License.

Primarily used for Gaming at 1080P

Does the below look reasonable ?

I also am struggling to identify a Case - preferably Midi Tower - and I have circa £200 left for this. Looking at Cases , I am completely overwhelmed and would appreciate any thoughts on what are deemed good cases.

Ideally - Sound Dampened , good ventilation and fans that come with , not fussed about Window looking into the PC at all.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,012.99
(includes shipping: £11.10)

What is your current system spec?

I would say 1tb is too small if you are going to store games on it.

Just noticed you do not have a cpu cooler listed do you already have one you are going to use or will it be stock cooler?

Hi ,

I think the Retail 1700 comes with AMD Wraith Spire CPU cooler with a red LED ring.

Existing Case is an old Antec P180

My current Spec is this.
GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz
XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Iiyama ProLite E2208HDD 22" Widescreen Monitor
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz
MSI 870-C45 AMD 770 Chipset DDR3 Motherboard
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive
Power Supply Corsair HX520 Modular
Mechanical Drive- 698GB Seagate ST3750640AS ATA Device
Existing Case is an old Antec P180 Tower

I will probably use the old Seagate as well.

Regarding the case, i have just bought a dark base pro 900 which i will be building in this afternoon. The feature list is very impressive. It has sound dampening, silent wings 3 140mm fans, dust filters, wireless charging built in and is completely modular. Was pricey at 190 quid, but i think there is a non pro version for 140.

A case is very much a personal choice though, down to individual taste. I prefer the clean more minimalistic look.

I've done a couple of builds using the Fractal Design's Define R5 Midi Tower Case. It's a very solid case for the money and weighs a ton due to all the sound dampening material covering all the panels. It has a full sized hinged door at the front which hides the optical bays and acts as another barrier for stopping sound.

As IvanDObskey alluded to, a case is as much about personal taste combined with the performance you're after - and unfortunately, I too like simple lines on a case, so my input is not that radically different apart from price. But it performs very well for the money and really is a sturdy bit of kit.

I have been thinking about the existing PSU I have - Power Supply Corsair HX520 Modular

Would this be enough to power the new components correctly - or should I think about new PSU as well

Windows 10 is registered to your motherboard, it may not be as simple as swapping over the drive.

Hmmmm any good pointers, I was planning to download the ISO from Microsoft, work out the correct key and do a Clean Install and if necessary use the Phone Line to validate. I seem to recall doing this before whenever I upgraded the PC.

Again, the key should be a standard one - if you upgraded from 7/8 it's your motherboard it's registered to.

if it came with windows 10, I'm not sure.

Just been doing a search on MS Forums - seems that someone ran into the same problem when upgrading to new CPU and MOBO. From what I can gather , as long as I have the original WIN7 Licence key, which I do. I should be able to phone into MS and they 'should' be able to validate it.

You should be fine - I've never experienced a problem (even with OEM window versions). In my experience as long as you're polite, knowledgeable and act in a way that you expect the key to be transferred they will usually accommodate. I've not had a problem yet - but admittedly we may be on borrowed time as their ability to scrutinise our systems is getting better all the time but their agents are usually very friendly even if they're not that clued up...
