New Version Of VLC Player - 0.8.6e

I imagine it's just using the same thing as VLC's "post processing". The only difference is that with VLC it isn't enabled by default.

In VLC it is enabled via "video tab > post processing". It makes lower quality video's much smoother, without blurring.

I can't seem to find this setting.

Also, what kind of tweaks are useful on VLC - I mainly use it for playing DVDs.

Note that with decent videos you're unlikely to notice any difference, but I find it works very well for low-quality videos.

I find this feature is pretty much negatively useful.. all the intricacies in hi-res x264 rips just get blurred out.. it just seems to add a global Gaussian blur.

FFDshow has post-processing enabled by default, which I find horrendous :/

Thanks peeps :) I tried to find the option with nothing and a DVD loaded but nadda, just tried with a WMV and it's there :)

I think the main one for DVD is to turn on de-interlacing and set it to blend
Video Tab > De-interlace > Blend

I'm also interested in other tweaks though. e.g. Video output module, what does that do and what should it be on?

The output module specifies to which API it will present the video. On Windows both DirectX and OpenGL should work equally well, though if you're having trouble playing some HD content, it might be worth it to experiment with differemt modules.

Per the above discussion, the reasons I like VLC so much are manifold. I like that it's freely licensed, I like that it's cross-platform (I can use the same media player on Linux, Windows, OS X, and Solaris). I like that it plays pretty much everything without whining for additional codecs.
