I am so sorry if I got your hopes up . I have never dealt with ViewSonic customer services. It seems they do want a proof of sale (i.e. the sales reciept or invoice). I don't agree with that policy at all and I thought it is a pointless addition to get ViewSonic out of servicing or replacing as many monitors as possible. A lot of manufacturers I have dealt with, including Samsung and Sony, have the warranty completely tied to the serial number. What this means is that if you don't have a sales receipt then your monitor is still covered for a given period after manufacturer (i.e. if you can't prove the purchase date).
I'd contact ViewSonic and attempt to file a warranty repair/replacement. The monitor itself would hopefully have been manufactured recently enough to be within the warranty expiration period - but I'm not sure if ViewSonic operates like this.
