Got a new internal WD Red Pro 4TB to replace my 2TB data drive.

In a USB caddy the computer sort of detects it but won't initalise the drive - device not ready. Does same plugged into my work laptop.

Plugged into a SATA port on the motherboard (Asus Z170-A) the drive isn't even picked up at all.

The drive makes a sort of beep when power is turned on and I can feel the vibrations of it spinning.

Have I got a DOA dud or does my motherboard just not like 4TB drives? (Wouldn't think the motherboard would matter when connected via USB though).

Your mobo would have to be seriously old to have problems with 4TB drives and yours isn't. It might be worth trying a different internal SATA cable, power connector and SATA port just for completeness. It's also worth checking whether any of the SATA ports are disabled if you use M.2 drives. But I suspect it's DOA.

Tried the SATA cable for the existing 2TB drive and the ones for the Blu Ray drive - not detected.

Gonna give it a go in the USB caddy at work as a last test but I'm leaning towards dead.
