new wheel

iRacing looks (imo) better than rFactor but not as nice as GRID, it does however give a sensation actually like driving a car rather than rotating an image on the screen :p

For $19 for a one month trial with the Legends on the oval and Solstice/Spec Racer Ford (especially the latter) on the road side of things I'd definately reccomend giving it a go, if you don't like it it's not a lot wasted, but if you're into sims I think you'll love it.

You might not love looking back at how much you've spent on it after a few months though :p

But then I bought rFactor and probably haven't played it for more than a couple of hours, but I've played iRacing for several hours a week (at least, sometimes several hours a day) since August last year...
There is a trial courtesy of Radical that includes the stock content, plus the Radical and Silverstone, well worth it.

Bit of a thread hijack, don't think there is an ***offical iRacing thread***.

You were talking me into iRacing months ago in another thread somewhere, finally got into it. Loving it so far, and I've eagerly been awaiting getting into the Skippy. I don't fancy dropping £50 on the full pack yet though, any idea if I can enter the series when it moves onto a track I own, or do I need all the tracks to compete?

Forgot about the Radical offer, is that open to everyone then? if so there's no excuses PinkFloyd :p

As long as you own the car and track you can race that week, you don't need to buy everything. Think it's Sebring Modified this week but next week it's Summit Point Jefferson so assuming you've got the skippy you'll be able to race next week :)

The trial code for the radical month is PR-RADICAL-ONE-MONTH
Open to all new accounts I believe

I gave it a go but I actually felt less connected with the car in iRacing personally. Didn't try it for long. I was somewhat distracted by how noisy my wheel became even with low force feedback levels

The reason I won't go down the iRacing route is that I like to do other things, I don't want to pay for something and then find I'd rather play something else that month.
I'd feel compelled to play it as I'd bought it.

yep... this is the email

Because you still need to race with your real name, plus they can't have thousands of wreckers signing up new accounts and not having to care about Safety Records. It's not a huge deal.

Cheers :)

Anyone know what happens to the additional trial content after the first month?

Signing up and downloading now. Gives me something to play about with I guess. I presume I shouldn't have a problem racing online with a complete lack of wreckers relative to games such as GTR?

hi, just bought a drive fx to play GRID with, is it just me or it seems impossible to control the dam car, it either under steer or over steer even on normal cars.

i understand it takes a bit of time getting used to but any one got any tips? like any settings i might wana change or any tracks or cars i might wana try a few hundred laps with to get used to it?

...I just use the keyb for Grid :)

Not 100% but I believe it stays with the account forever, lucky gits :p

I've only had one guy intentionally mess around with my race, an oval guy that jumped the start, blamed me (I was on pole) and proceeded to go really slowly and mess around with me and 2nd place. But other than that there are always incidents as people mess up but it's obvious that it's just a mistake and they usually apologise at the end of the race.

The Safety Rating system is quite nice in that, although it punishes both parties (a no-fault system), it's light enough that unless you're the cause of the incidents, or completely inept at avoiding other peoples accidents, it doesn't cause any long-term harm to your SR.

Anyway, enjoy, you'll probably find the Solstice a pita, but I find it's good as an intro car, good to teach you about keeping the momentum up and also using weight shifting to get it to turn how you want. The Spec Racer Ford is a great car, one of the series I'm running full-time this season :)

Would love to know how he blamed you for jumping the lights. lol.
I've been trying out the Radical on Silverstone, seems quite nice - but really want to try online. I clicked race and I can only see one race on an oval in pickup trucks (on the web site thing) is there no way to look for other races? Or am I missing something here :p

It was an oval race, so 2 laps under pace car before a rolling start, by the time the start came he was 5+ car lengths ahead of me, I'd been maintaining a 43mph speed behind the pace car, was odd to say the least...

Anyway, with the racing, You're gonna have a Rookie licence with a SR of 2.50 as a new driver, which limits you to the Pontiac Solstice for (road) racing online (the Radical is a B class car, so you need a C class licence + 4.0SR, or a B/A class licence with any SR)

In order to see sessions, if you click the 'Series' bit on the grey menu bar of the home page and scroll down to the 'Solstice Challenge' series. Now you can do several things, if you click the '+' you'll see the schedule and some more info, if you click on the main entry bit you'll go to the series home page, or you can click on 'Select >' in order to select that series as your current one.

Once it's selected as your current series then you can go back to the top of the page and click on the 'Race ^' icon, which will give you 'Select Session' and 'Test Car on Track' options, the session page gives the option of Practice (SR doesn't count), Qualifying/Time Trial (SR counts on a 0.35x multiplier) and of course Race's (SR counts).

Think the Solstice has just started Laguna Seca this week, not my favourite track, an alien time around there is a 1:47, think my best is a low 1:49...

Was just in a practise session in the Solstice with someone lapping around 1:50 - I've managed a 1:55 around there so far. Slightest touch outside of the track causes the rear end to spin out at the moment and whilst I can catch it some of the time I still loose valuable time!
Seems this really isn't a pick up and play game like GTREvo is. Is there not a quick race function or similar? Or is it just the time of the day and not knowing where to look resulting in no-one to race :p

A 1:55 is pretty good though for your first day though, I've been in two weeks and I went from 1:57s to 1:50s (last week was Lime Rock though).

Why is your rear wheel touching grass? Oversteer? Don't let the back end kick out and touch the grass. At this stage it seems to be better to learn how to drive consistently smooth rather than fast.

It isn't a pick up and play sim so no quick race function, mind you without aids and with full AI strength the GTR games aren't easy either. Serious business is iRacing!

There are always full races going on, but you need to be ready for it before you get in there.

There should be plenty of people to race in the rookie series, if you go to the session page races are every hour, with the ability to sign up 30 minutes before the session starts.

1:55's aren't too shabby on your first day, it did take me several weeks of laguna seca to get down to the 49's, and even then it's not consistant.

Noticed a few iRacers here! Any of you guys post in the England forum, havent got a clue whos who LOL.

I post there semi-regularly, Joshua Harley, which one are you? :p

Just been playing around with the steering wheel settings so have the full 900 degrees working correctly now, much nicer control of the car now when cornering! :p
So pretty sure I'll be able to go beat 1:55 now! (I'll report back lol)

As to rear wheel touching the grass, bit of oversteer generally from being a bit aggresive on the throttle, I'm having good fun just cruising around, just wish it had Nordsclieffe!

I'll keep an eye out for some races - or will do once I'm comfortable I can push without crashing and ruining other people's races :p

Aha yeah I recognise your name seen a few of your posts, dont think ive met you on track yet though? Scott Wood is me, see a lot of people post in forums about them in iRacing and never know who they are!
