New Windows Update - Browser Choice!

Mr Quick said he had sent a complaint about the choices to the European Commission.

Who, in all honesty really gives a (Insert expletive here).
I mean seriously, what a waste of time and money. Are they going to offer people a choice in notepad (Plenty of choice out there) wordpad, MS Paint? I mean cmon, why exactly are we paying these european commisioners?

Having said that, I can understand why a web designer might be driven to have an irrational hatred for anything using IE's rendering engine...

Ok, so I got this update through today but...

*Sigh*

Because OSX doesn't have the 90% market share Windows has. It's the same with all these anti-competitive rulings, for a company to abuse their position they have to have a position to abuse.
Surely by that standard Apple have 100% of the OSX market and are using that to push Safari onto people that don't know better...

Anyone know when this will be available through WSUS? Stopped our update server at work automatically approving anything until this ****** appears

it didnt appear in this weeks batch of updates.

i dont think itll appear in WSUS to be honest, corporations normally have their own default browser policys anyway.. anyway youll still have to approve the update to get it to install (or you should).

This is nothing but a good thing.....

pita update but worth it in the long run, choise = CHOICE

This will create loads of confusion. Lots of people don't even know what a browser is - they just know that they click the blue 'e' to 'open the internet'. Now they're being faced with a choice they don't understand, when their internet was working perfectly fine ten minutes before. Most will either just close the window, phone up a geek or click on Internet Explorer to get the window to go away.

I thought it was supposed to offer you a browser update if you picked IE? Or is this only on Windows Vista / 7?

I got this today with Win7 but not XP... I was already using Chrome portable and it still made me choose.

Can you uninstall IE8 under Win7?

You do not want to remove it and you still want it patched. Some part of the Windows Core uses it still (Help and Support f.example).

I still believe Steam uses IE as it's back end also.

Why did you install it? It is pretty clear that you can choose to install it or not, just right click "hide" on Windows update.

It installed itself overnight when I left my PC on - I've set windows to install updates automatically. I managed to remove it, just need to take ownership of the file, and give yourself all the permissions. But why should I need to do that to remove it?

That is true actually.

I've not seen it, yet...

If you close the prompt about changing browser, it doesn't seem to remind you again. Not sure if it creates a desktop shortcut to bring it back up. So whole exercise seems just a laxed compliance with E.U. ruling

I've had two family members ring me in the past few days to ask WTF this is and if it's legit. Neither had a clue and picked IE because it's what they use. I can see this quickly becoming a support nightmare for quite a few OEM support lines and others.

I really don't see the point and it's more bizzare you only see it if IE is your default browser, surely that's MS shooting themselves in the foot?

Not really no. They are offering a choice, and they know as well as most of us that the huge majority of Windows users will just stick with IE anyway. There is no point offering Firefox, Opera, Chrome, whatever users a choice, since they already made the choice in installing something other than IE.

So did I. I chose not to use any other 3rd party browser.

Firefox is installed, but I do not use it. It only gets used when a website has not been coded properly for all browsers (Usually open source based or similar websites!!).

I still got that MS update. I refused to use it and uninstalled the update. How dare they.
