Hey guys,

So i figured id buy WoW and give it a whirl. I bought it retail and having installed it, it seems i need some HUGE updates. Im at work atm so i have access to very fast connection (7mb/sec ish).

Ive downloaded 2.4.2 Patch and installed fine, 2.4.2 to 3.0.1 however i put in the directory then run but it asks me about moving the directory of the Game from program files as its not recommended etc.

Right so i tried saying no and installing..it fails.. i tried saying yes to moving - it fails. Ive run all patches as administrator.

Could someone please point me in the direction of the files i need preferably with a decent connection.

Thanks for any help.
MrS

Its worth mentioning this is the original WoW, not BC..

Are you on Vista by any chance? You may need to go to the destination folder that it's trying to move to, right-click it, select permissions and then remove any restrictions on it. I can't be more specific as I'm at work and on a different OS so can't describe it more clearly.

Yeah im on vista.

I cant believe how difficult this is to get going.. i wouldnt mind using the supplied installer if my download didnt run at 60kb/sec..

So you mean change the permissions of the Program files directory or the one its trying to move it to?

There must be a simple way to install and patch on vista AND keep it in program files?

Ta again.

Do what i did the other day, download all the patches from gamershell, then install them manually :D

I reinstalled mine yesterday. 9 CDs and an hour update!

Also had to edit permissions. Stupid nanny rubbish on vitsa. hell yeah I want to edit my OWN program files.

Im gonna download every patch i can find on gamershell and do a fresh install outside of Program Files with Vistas UAC turned off.

What could possibly go wrong?! ;)

I really just want to play it, damn game.

Ok so ive downloaded all of these...

I realise i probably dont need all the really old ones but ive not missed any major ones have i?

If i dont need to install all of them would a WoW guru please number the ones i need in order from installing the retail copy of WoW.

I say retail as im not sure if it starts at a certain version.

Thanks!

Thats the thing though even if i use works super duper connection with the blizzard downloader i still only get 60-70kbps.

Which is..ridiculous. Hence downloading them all off gamershell :)

Pfffft. I downloaded from the wow-europe site. I didn't have the CD's did full install with all expansions. Took me about 5hours downloading and installing. It downloaded all the patches too. Forget CD's.

You do realise that the Wrath of the Lich King DVD includes the data for World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade, so you only need the Wrath DVD if doing a complete installation?

Wish I did before re-installing  Still, at least I found out before I did the laptop install :p

you've got to be ever so slightly careful of which patches you download, but the easiest way to do it is download the right patches, then stick them in the default folder that the blizzard downloader downloads the patches to if you leave it to automatically. That way you start up the launcher, it detects need for patch, the updater starts, finds the completed download and installs it, rinse and repeat, seemed to cause me less issues that way.

I also had no issues with vista permissions, but I always set aside partition for windows with plenty of spare space but put games and anything permanent on a separate partition. As long as you don't install on the windows drive there aren't any issues with it moving the folder or doing anything else. The default folder for the patches is still made on the windows drive.

AFAIK theres different patches from default WOW install up to latest client if you have normal WOW, burning crusade, or WOTLK, so you'll need to get whatever the basic ones for a WOW only install is.

Patching is utterly ridiculous it has to be said. Why you can't, from what I can tell, download the simple up to date full client from somewhere I don't know. Every new book update(or every other update) they update the client download for Lotro so you get the latest client without tonnes of other crap to install. I got back to WOW after several years not playing and was baffled, bemused and angered by the patching process.

I'm confused. I installed WoW classic from my CDs last night and downloaded all the classic patches and played for a few hours after activating my account using the 10-day burning crusade trial. If I went and bought the burning crusade expansion online would I need to download the burning crusade client and patches labelled for that expansion or do I already have all that content? Any way of finding out?

Rubbish patch system.

This is why i just let the blizzard downloader do all the work!! saved me working anything out. downloaded pretty fast aswell (around 1.5mbps) but it killled my net connection cause it used all the upload bandwidth :(

Blizzard downloader uses torrents... torrent ports are prob blocked.

Blizzard downloader has and always will be rubbish.
