Evening all, sorry if this is a repost, hard with no search.

I have a relatively new Xbox 360, probably 1-2 months old and its already destroyed 1 disk (Pro Evo 6), and I can see from the other disks its probably not going to be the first. Ive always been careful with my stuff so its not down to me being careless. I know Microsoft replace first party disks for £10 but this isnt the point as my 360 will just scratch the new one. Is there anything I can do or is it going to have to be sent away?

If you bought it from the high street, just take it back to the shop, most will swap it for a new one.

Isnt that just within 28 days though? Im pretty sure mine is older than that.

If this isnt the case, could I keep my hard drive and would they replace PES6?

Ok, Ive just rung the chain store I purchased from, they said to bring it in tommorow, they will have a look at its condition and should be able to replace it there and then.

He asked me if I had it standing up or laying down and he went on to say the theres a fault with standing the console on its side as it knocks the lens thus scratching the disks. Is this true?

not as far as i know, i know it'll scratch if you move the console from vertical to horizontal while the machines on and a disc is in the drive. I've had mine vertical since launch without any disc scratching (apart from when my idiot sister picked up the 360 while we were playing pro evo  )

You can have it either standing or laying down, neither should scratch your disk however moving the console while it's on is bad for the the optical disc as the laser comes into contact with it as there isn't any rubber protecting it.

However I have heard a lot of problems with peoples units scratching the disc for no reason what-so-ever.

If your 360 is doing it for no reason, get a new one. You should be able to get a new disc too. If the store don't let you have a new disc, MS should do ... although a while ago MS refused to replace scratched discs, this may have changed.

Does yours make a 'crunching' sound randomly Frank? My 360 has just started doing it during games, it'll be spinning away and then a loud crunch sound, and you can hear the disc drive stop, and then spin back up.

Yes thats exactly it. :( Eventually it will come up with the error message, this disk cannot be read and reset itself.

Aren't you supposed to be dead?

Mine used to make that crunching sound too, it was in the standing vertical position whenever I would hear it, never moved the console with disks in it or even when it was on, but still got random disk errors to accompany that "lovely" crunching sound, first time I heard it 2 days after I got it I was like "you're kidding me!", I knew what it meant (witnessed my mates 360 scratch up his oblivion disk for no reason what-so-ever!) thankfully no scratched disks in my case! Phew!

But since then I've put the console on it it's side/flat and crunching sound/disk errors haven't happened since :/

Not saying it's a fix, but in my case it's worked.

Kind of a bummer I can't put the console in a vertical position, I don't know whether to bother replacing it, it's relatively new, a replacement will probably end up doing the same thing with my luck :p

Damn, never did like the sound of that crunching. Although I've gotta say, I've not noticed it scratching any discs that are in the drive as of yet. My copy of Forza 2 is still unmarked and that's been in there for absolutely ages.

Suppose I should hold off until the replacements they send out are also HDMI equipped :p :D

I'd love to keep mine on its side, but the DVD drive jams occasionally on its side. So I don't trust it... just keep it flat and be safe :p

laying it flat is much better to prevent disk scratching for some reason.

mine has been laid flat and hasnt scratched a single disk.

Spoken to the shop again, just taking the unit (no HD) back to them in a bit for a replacement. They should replace my copy of PES6 as well apparantly that the machine has ruined.

In all fairness, the machine was built to stand up and thats the way I need it to be used. Hopefully I may get one of the new machines with the better cooling although a decent DVD drive would be fine for now.

My launch day console (may it rest in peace) was stood up from day one and didn't scratch any discs (Hitachi drive).

My replacement from 10th August is vertical (Hitachi drive again) and doesn't scratch discs (so far). To be honest having the console vertical or horizontal shouldn't make any difference. If the console is scratching discs that it's either a fault with the drive (and should be replaced/exchanged) or an imbalance in the manufacture of the DVD/CD (which may mean it spins at a very slight angle in the drive and catches the drive lens).

Based on the reports of disc scratching so far, it's most likely the drive that is at fault so getting the 360 replaced should solve the problem.

Well they replaced the console without even looking at it, got a nice new one now. It will remain a mystery whether its one of the newer models but it certainly hasnt got HDMI! :p They also gave me a brand new copy of PES6.

I think ive got the same model of DVD drive but its back on its side again so im hoping it was just a faulty drive and forget about it.

Sounds good, and you know, everytime I see this thread I get the image of a 360 DJ'ing, you know the good kind of disk scratching, ficka ficka.
