Hi,

I'm close to finalising my new rig and would appreciate you guys giving it the once over and pointing out any faux pas or incompatibility that may be obvious I have missed.

Note: I will be dual x16 SLI 2 x MSI OC GTX760's (I already have one, hence only one being in the list)

Intel 5930K 3.50GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - OEM (CM8064801548338)
OCZ RevoDrive350 240GB PCI-E SSD with Adaptor Card (RVD350-FHPX28-240G)
GeIL EVO Potenza 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-23000C16 2800MHz Quad Channel Kit - Red (GPR416GB2800C16QC)
Asus X99-Pro Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
MSI GeForce GTX 760 OC Gaming Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
NZXT Hale Power 90+ 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply
NZXT H2 Classic Silent Midi Tower Case - White
Noctua NH-D15 Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler with two NH-A15 Fans
Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound (30g)

I'm unsure if the M.2 x4 is the correct slot for the RevoDrive, so advice in this area is appreciated.

Thanks,
1DMF

Well after many days contemplation, forum scouring, review digesting and researching, I revamped my specification and this is what I have purchased.

Asus X99-Pro Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i7-5930K 3.50GHz Socket 2011-V3
Noctua NH-D15 Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler with two NH-A15 Fans
Gelid GC-3 Extreme Performance Thermal Compound
G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Black 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-22400 2800MHz Quad Channel
G.Skill Phoenix Blade 480GB PCI-Express 2.0x8 SSD
NZXT Phantom Enthusiast USB3.0 Full Tower Case - White
2 x NZXT FS-200 Enthusiast Silent Case Fan, blue LED - 200mm
1 x NZXT FX-140LB Enthusiast Performance Control Fan - 140mm
SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - White
2 x MSI GTX 760 TwinFrozr OC 2GB GDDR5 (Dual SLI)

I spent a little more than I was expecting too, but I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Though there will be many build hours, set up, installation and migration ahead, which should keep me out of mischief this Christmas :D

well I really wanted the coolaboratory stuff as it seems to perform the best in the reviews I read with the Gelid a close 2nd but both are out of stock on OCUK.

Admittedly the Noctua NT-H1 doesn't fair too bad

Compound comparisons

But as I got the Gelid for £6, it's no big deal in the grand scheme of things, and I guess I now have the chance to test for myself which one I find performs the best.

Im not sure about the heatsink+RAM combination.

I see there are cut outs in the NH-D15 to fit tall RAM, but that is for dimm slots close to the socket.

As you will be populating every other dimm slot (thats how quad channel works) then the fan that is on the end (not the one in the middle) will possibly have to moved up the face of the cooling stack. Thus making the overall height taller than the 165mm quoted by Noctua.

Im not sure about the heatsink+RAM combination.
Well I'll have to wait and see if there is clearance. I did read there was no way the Hyper-X would fit due to riser height.

- or is there something specific on the Pro board you want?

I've always ran Asus Pro boards ever since bad experience with Gigabyte and MSI.

I currently have an Asus P5QWS Pro and have been very happy, I decided if it aint broke!

Plus the missus is buying me the CPU for Chrimbo, so I'll have to wait for that item ;)

I currently have an original NZXT from when they first came out and have been very happy with it (the one with 4 large side case fans)

I have read many reviews about the Phantom and saw nothing to put me off, plus I like the look of it (no accounting for taste I guess!)

Would it not be better to sell your 760 and buy a Geforce 970 instead. Seems unbalanced spending big buying an X99 system and then running 2 mid range last gen video cards?

If your budgets tight I'd sooner ditch the 5930k in favour of a 5820k and put it towards the video card if it were my rig.

Edit: just noticed you've bought it already so maybe a bit late to be suggesting spec changes!

I already have a 760 so actually only bought another.

The 900 series is way more than just simply buying another 760 and SLIing, so thought I'd give it a go.

After all before that I was running a GTX260, so SLI dual 760's is going to keep me happy for a few years to come I would hope.

The only thing that concerns me is the NZXT has a maximum cooler height of 170mm.

The Noctua is 165MM with the fans in there normal position, should you have to raise the outside fan up to clear tall RAM, then it may go over 170mm tall.

hmm, I see. I still think I would rather replace the cooler than the case!

I know it's a damn good cooler and all that and apparently can hold it's own compared to water cooling, so some forums have suggested.

I'm not sure what might be an alternative, do you have any suggestions?

Am I simply going to have to wait and see if it fits and if not swap it, or is there something on a par that would be shorter?

Edit -> I just checked the description "Features support for larger heat sinks, graphics cards, and E-ATX motherboards enabling enthusiasts to include any of today’s hottest components", so made the fatal mistake of assuming it would fit OK! - Well it does say ANY of todays hottest components!

Looking at the model down (Noctua NH-D14-2011), it's 5mm shorter, so I guess if it don't fit, I'll have to swap it for that one?

Have you thought about how much the case costs, then how much the extra fans cost? you could start with another (read better) case.

well to be honest, I was planning on running things @ stock, as I always do with new builds, so even the Intel stock cooler would suffice.

I've emailed OCUK for their advice as there is still time to change the order.

Thanks for the heads up, appreciated.

There is no stock cooler with the cpu's whether retail or OEM.
Really? wow shows how long it's been since I bought a CPU, there always used to be!

Nice looking case, but it's out of stock, I'm also concerned with Corsair. I have always know them as good RAM manufacturers and even have a Corsair 620w PSU, which I have no complaints over.

So I bought their gaming keyboard and mouse. Big mistake, worst piece of peripheral junk I have ever bought, their mouse doesn't even work through my switcher box and plugged direct into the PC the scroll wheel has a mind of it's own constantly going in the wrong direction, not to mention the keyboard felt nasty and so I've gone back to my MS keyboard and logitech mouse.

Swore never to buy Corsair again!

The Socket2011 CPUs (3820K to 5960X) don't come with coolers , probably as Intel don't have a stock cooler good enough for them.

The retail Haswell/devilscanyon/Sandybridge stuff do.

OIC, not sure what the retail box is all about then, it usually meant it came with a stock cooler.

I've been doing some more research on the Ripjaws 4 and Noctua.

The G.Skill website says
And don’t worry; Ripjaws 4 has a module height of 40mm – the same height as previous Ripjaws family modules – and will be compatible with most CPU heatsinks!

Where as the Noctua says
Thanks to its recessed lower fins, the NH-D15 provides 64mm clearance for tall memory heatsinks in single fan mode, making it compatible with most high end RAM modules on the market. In dual fan mode, the NH-D15 should be used with standard height RAM (up to 32mm).*

So even with the 5mm to play with that makes 37mm and the ram is 40mm.

So I either run it in single fan mode or swap it for the D14! So much for not worrying Ripjaws!
