New X99 Build - Advice Please

Its the shear size of the fans on it that is the problem, they are bigger than the face of the cooler.

Two others,

YOUR BASKET
1 x Noctua NH-U12S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU Cooler with NF-F12 Fan £52.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC12DX CPU Cooler - Black £44.98
Total : £107.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

This Noctua has a 100% ram compatibility on all platforms.

The Phanteks will also fit but out of stock (maybe ask when its due in)

Thats one on my X79 platform, It will go onto X99 just the same.

Im not even going to suggest you get low profile RAM as thats a compromise too far, those Gskills are lovely, mine will be with me Monday:)

The Phanteks looks interesting but it is on pre-order.

I've emailed order support and asked them to hold back delivery until this is sorted out.

I really appreciate your help and bringing this to my attention, considering the days I've spent reading countless reviews , forums, manufacturers websites etc. I can't believe I overlooked something as simple as RAM / Cooler clearance!

But as all the descriptions say "don't worry, anything will fit", I didn't cross check the dimension - d'oh!

Its fine always here to help and to make sure things fit etc.

I would hate for you not to have a cooler that didn't fit or a gfx card that was too long for the case.

What I don't get is why the mobo MF's don't move the ram somewhere else, I've had plenty of boards over the years where the ram has been the other side of the board no-where near the CPU socket!

Even with your Phantek it still looks rather cosy, surely they could move a few capacitors around to give more clearance, well you'd think!

I guess it's because they've started putting 8 ram slots on the board instead of the usual 4 that's taking up the space.

Though who can afford 64GB of DDR4 currently, I didn't even go for 32GB and what's the point if you are running Win7 premium as I believe it only handles max 16GB anyway.

Though I do have ultimate which apparently can take 192GB - yeah dream on MS if you think I'll ever fit that in DDR4!

With DDR4 (quad channel memory controller to be exact) the traces have to be equal lengths per channel, which is why they are either side of the socket.

Plus shorter traces = better performance.

The Gigabyte Z97X SOC Force LN2 model (a rare board) has only two dimm slots moved as close to the socket as possible, it doesn't even have cooler mounting holes to further improve the traces and make them more direct.

Couldn't they be equal further apart?

Hey what do I know, the physics of electrons, frequencies in electrical cycles and all that is way out of my league of comprehension.

As much as I love building, using and programming computers, the maths / physics at a hardcore level is something I'll never understand.

crikey, just found my old OCUK order from 2006

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £359.99

This new rig will be running dual SLI 760's for less than I paid for a single GTX 8800!

I think that's a bargain!

Looking forward to playing Far Cry 4 & Assassin's Creed Unity on them :D

Just spoke with OCUK and they have swapped out the D15 for the D14 and refunded the difference.

Again, thank you for the heads up, really appreciated.
