New X99 build! What do you think?

Hehe, that was my initial dilemma when I was first thinking about the build, Pete.
I'll be using this machine for music production as well as gaming so I need the extra cores. There are no 6+core Skylakes yet.

AIO is pretty pointless a good air cooler can beat them at Load & they don't leak ;) or degrade
Yeah, a lot of the AIO water coolers tend to have fairly loud stock fans. The NH-D15S is a solid air cooler and the Noctua fans are all top-notch.

Same with the Crucial RAM -- it's not flashy but reliable and often conservatively clocked. Great prices at the moment too. I'm going for the Crucial Sport (2400MHz) or Elite (2666MHz) 32GB kit in my X99 build in the next few weeks.

Depending on your motherboard you may need to check the dimensions of the backplate on the MSI 980 Ti as the NH-D15 is a big a cooler even with the increased RAM clearance on the S variant and it may encroach right up to the GPU.

Good points - thank you!
Does it matter that the Crucial RAM I specified is not XMP ready? Will that make overclocking more tricky? (Never overclocked before.)
As for the MSI 980Ti + Noctua NH-D15S + ASRock X99 Extreme6 combo, do you really think it could be a potential problem? The backplate only seems about 3-4mm higher than the actual PCI slot, and the D15S extends downwards 67mm (apparently) from the centre of the CPU. I suppose I could contact ASRock and ask them what's the distance between the centre of the CPU and the top PCIe slot, but up until you mentioned it I never even thought this might be a problem.
Thanks

According to the Noctua compatibility list for the NH-D15S your motherboard is compatible. I recall reading a non-reference 980 Ti review a couple of days ago with a custom cooler and backplate where the reviewer was using a Noctua cooler and it looked like there was only 1-2mm clearance between the CPU cooler and GPU, although this may been the non-S version of the D14/D15 so you should be alright.

There's an e-mail address on the Noctua compatibility page to contact them if you have any specific concerns.
