New Xbox?

And as for shops not willing to sell consoles because they can't sell games that's rubbish, As long as they can make a profit they will sell the consoles.

You really have no idea.

A certain store relies on it's pre-owned sales because the markup on them is like 500%.

1080p 3D
Blu-ray
Major integration with windows phone & windows (*)
More advanced kinect
Much bigger focus on digital distribution (*)

The starred items are the ones that I think are definitely going to happen. Microsoft is loosing marketshare in both areas and anything that will keep people on their 'ecosystem' is something that they will most certainly include

Plenty of shops will sell consoles. Supermarkets, electrical shops. Catalogue shops. It's easy enough to buy a tv from a shop that doesn't sell coronation street. Easy to buy a cooker from a shop that doesn't sell chips. Etc etc.

This whole digital distribution thing isn't which craft! it's been successfully working for years on PC.
I never said it was mate, but its not for me. I collect games as well as play them. I cannot do that with digital distribution only which is exactly the reason I'm not interested.

My current wishlist...

1. More Powerful - This is pretty much a given - but it should be much more powerful than the 360.
2. Smaller Power Supply than the 360
3. Small Console altogether
4. Blu-Ray
5. Focus on Digital Distribution
6. Backwards Compatibility

I also hope they don't focus too much on the motion controls - Unless they are perfect and as fast as a human is, I'm not interested :(

I'm also equally uninterested in 3D - Which is what I fear the most...

I'm sure that Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo won't lose too much sleep if these types of store go under.

Have you noticed that high street stores are closing down and being replace by big supermarkets that sell just about everything? I'll put my house on it that these stores will sell consoles without games.

mame - absolutely agree with everything you said :)

SonicUK - "which craft" wasn't aimed at you in particular mate, but i do feel optical media as had it's day just like Vinyl, VHS and Floppies before it. We can't progress if we stand still!

If they went the digital distribution way, Virginmedia users would be stuffed. They'd have to download overnight while everyone else can download during the day.

Then there is the problem if you have a download cap on your broadband.

Virgin Media users can download during the day, my cut off is at 4pm when things start to get capped. (if I go over 3.5Gb that is)

No way will we see a digital distribution for a console in the next generation. It would be madness.

Its about how you implement it.

look at the disaster that was the download only PSP go.

But then look at the rise of Android and iOS devices as gaming platforms. They are download only and they've taken off ! games like Angry birds are hugely profitable for the developers.

It can work, but would only work if implemented correctly. Trying to charge subscription for the same content as you get on the xbox 360 for example, wouldn't work.

Aye but iOS and Android devices are permanently connected to a delivery medium, that is a benefit of their primary purpose. Games consoles are still not guaranteed a connection to the net.

yeah but with built in wireless a hell of a lot would.

Its a question of integrating it correctly rather than forcing it down peoples throats. Ipad Wifi still manages fine for example ...

Aye but again, iPad is mobile - you can take it round to your Nan's and download stuff from her connection and the size is typically <100MB. If the PS3 is pushing 50GB now, the next-gen file sizes will be even bigger.

My guess would be they stick with Blu-ray. I'm sure the capacity has reached (and gone beyond) quad-layer 100GB which is good enough for next-gen games and still ample for high definition and 3D movies. In the next-gen, the Blu-ray drive speed should be a lot faster - enough to stream data off without installation. Or they could even have some kind of Blu-ray hybrid where the important data is cached off to onboard 8GB of memory and the rest of the data is streamed as necessary.

Wouldn't be surprised to see HDDs go the way of the dodo and let users add their own external removeable drives (possibly using the new Intel Light Peak bus) when they want to download stuff from PSN/XBLA.

I agree but it will definitely go that way as im guessing all these second hand game shops cost them a fortune in lost sales.

Not as much as the amount of sales they'd lose as a result of not being able to sell physical copies in retail locations.

There's barely any profit on the consoles. It's why many retailers declined to stock the PSP Go; if they can't sell the games, why sell the console? I work on the entertainment/electrical section for Sainsbury's, and there's always a push to sell consoles/bundles cheap so people will buy the games and accessories as well, and keep coming back for them. If you remove games from the equation, there's much less profit to be made.

The cooker and chips comparison is void because it's always been the case with games consoles that the profit is in the games and accessories; it's not the same sort of thing at all.

According to that news story. Microsoft are now hiring a team to come up with a next gen console. If I was a betting man, I'd say Christmas 2015 at the very latest. So what do you want to see in this next gen console?

Bluray inclusion?
Focus on motion controls?

I'm pretty confident my prediction is on the right track after the following leak:

Major integration with windows phone & windows (*)

Shame the features already there are not available for all countries. Makes me so annoyed..

Apart from hardware upgrades I would like to see:
- Re-chargeable controllers.
- Backwards Compatibility
- Blu-ray or at least make it so installing games with multiple dics, you only have to use one.
- Less focus on motion controls :/

And I hope there will be more exclusives :)

What am i ment to be looking at here!??

1080p deffo
bluray
3d tv support
builtin wifi (i know)
backwards comptability

My biggest wish would be for microsoft to open its licence on periperals so we can get a lot better tech involved, but we know this will never happen.

Sorry image is a bit small. The caption on that screenshot reads as follows:

'Microsoft XBOX

From the designer, Ben Peterson's site : Source

Of course, just a rumour at the moment.
