I just got my old pc set up again and its shockingly slow. 80% cpu usage at idle and with a 5 year old pc thats not much left. Thing is ive deleted most things. The rest is either corrupted and cant be deleted or absolutly essential. Ive used about 5 gb so far. I realy realy need to format it. But i dont have any os discs ecept windows 95. Where can i get xp cheap? Or atleast software to speed it up again. Much appreciated, steve

80% CPU usage at idle? Are you sure you don't have a malware infestation on there or similar? What CPU is it? Even a five year old PC should run XP without worries. Definitely reinstall. If the specs are up to it, maybe grab the free Windows 7 beta (current builds will last into 2010 before expiring) and see how that goes? I've got 7 running on some pretty old hardware and it went fine.

XP is pretty expensive now, considering. If you still have the legit serial maybe just "borrow" a CD from a friend and use that. The licence is for the PC and the install, not the CD itself. Just make sure you use like for like (i.e. if it's an OEM serial use an OEM disc, not retail). I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along shortly. That or they'll have beaten me to it, knowing OcUK :p:D

Pretty much bob-on there Rainmaker.

Sounds like a reinstall job but I wouldn't waste my money on a old PC if you need to buy a license. What is actually hogging the CPU? Use task manager to see if there is one particular process using all the CPU and post it here.

Do you need windows or is Linux an option?

I got it from **** with xp installed and they refuse to give you the disk. It might well be virus filled as it had one but checks found nothing and i searched most files and deleted most. The processes are all giberish to me. And it wont let me put norton on ( crashes while reading any disk.) it dosnt have internet either so i cant use avg

Trust me, the last thing you want to be doing is installing Norton on that rig. Sounds like you've got a raft of malware on it. You could try putting some portable apps like malwarebytes etc on a USB stick. Failing that, you can download XP from any online source and use it legally with your existing key if you have it still.

Cheers guys. I cba with downloads and stuff so ill buy a new one. But with it that pricy ill get something else. Either vista or thw w7 beta. Speaking of which everywhere says its nolonger avalible for free download. Could you point me to a working page? Thanks.

And sorry about the competators. I thought that was only if you where refering people to other places for cheap parts. To clarify Personaly i will never use before said retailer as they caused this problem. Next time i will biuld myself a pc and insall a clean coppy. Go OCUK!
