New Yamaha R1

1st felt like it went on forever with my 08 R1 - on a private road it registered 120 mph on thebclock before I went into second.... I just had to find out :D But I lopped 40 mph off by losing a tooth off the front, totally transformed the bike and the best mod I made, cheapish too (added a speedo healer).

Unless your front sprocket only had 3 teeth on it to start with then you aren't going to drop from 120mph to 80mph by losing a single tooth.

Stay safe, they are seriously scarey, I don't care how wet that sounds - I learnt to respect mine quickly..... And try not to get corrupted; just because you can do 180+, doesn't mean you should ;)

R1 scary scary ? Going out on a Friday night and eating a curry vindaloo and coming home with out any toilet paper in the house is scary :D

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, try a Ducati 1098s on unscrubbed tyres in the wet........................................then you'll know what scary really is :D

I bet, my tyres felt alien in the wet, snow today:mad:

Gonna be another month before I get it back out at this rate!

C'mon springtime!!

Before changing it was 120 indicated (might have been 110 actually), after it was 80 indicated, but with a speedo healer - both occasions I hit the limiter and simply looked down at the speedo; those are the figures I saw

Nah, that would be stupid... and scary :D

The R1 was ballistic when you hit the stopper on the throttle, I'm guessing it was the YCCI giving you everything, 2/3 throttle was more than enough for me on the road.

Yeah I fully respect it already, feels like a beast & feels like a big step up from my old R6.

Baby steps for me again, i'm not going to rush it, just want some dry warm weather so I can find my feet on it!

I remember the first time I pulled away from the dealership on mine, the first thing that hit me (after coming from a ZX636) was the torque  Just moving a few yards was enough to smack me right in the face, arrgggghhhhh.... I want another one :(

For starters 120mph in first is simply impossible with stock gearing. The limiter would be around 120 kph though, so perhaps your clocks were set to kilometers? This equates to about 74.5 mph.

Stock gearing for an 08 R1 is 17/45. If your bike hit the limiter at an indicated 120mph (or kph) with a 17 tooth sprocket then by removing a tooth the speed at the same rev limit would be reduced to 120*(16/17) = 112.9mph (or kph).

One possible explanation is you had the clocks set to km with the original front sprocket and then reset it to miles with the smaller sprocket. This would mean a reading of 120 before and ~70ish afterwards.

Exactly that! The torque is really evident, even the slightest twist and it's pulling very strong, the R6 was a fluffy bike until 10k.

I set off from the dealership and pulled up round the corner just to catch my breath, nothing worse than people watching you set off on a big bike you've never ridden before, you feel eyes all over watching you.

Pretty sure is was MPH, but... I did have electrical gremlins when I was running it in and for a few months after - it kept cutting out, even on the move - I suppose it is possible that it could have reset to KPH during use. But unless I can get back on one again and give it a go - I'll have to rely on my memory.

Edit: the first gear on the 2007 R1 (possibly others) was stupidly long by the way (hence why I changed it - too much clutch slipping required at slow speeds), I've had to resort to a Google search, and at least one post I found stated that the 07 R1 (for him) topped out at 113 MPH... others say over the 100 mark. Either way, it's been a while and a decent crash since I did those silly things, and I don't want to hijack the OPs thread any further with a debate; and we're probably both going to be back 'n' forth with a few more posts on this. So agree to disagree I suppose :)

Hahahahaha, I was exactly the same, and the first roundabout/dual carriageway near George White in Swindon; I could see the owner bloke watching me go - felt like I was on my test again and having to behave.

What was really scary about my first (and only, so far...) liter bike was how used to the power you can get, sure it still surprises you when you wind the throttle on a tad more than normal, but I got to the stage where I didn't think twice about getting on a road I knew and doubling the speed limit in no time at all (when 'safe').

Power corrupts, but god damn it was always a great ride on the R1 - it must be even more intoxicating with the Crossplane soundtrack, and not the usual i4 sound - oh the trouble I'd be in (maybe I should stay with my Daytona) :D

Finally got me a few pics.

Went for a little run on it today. Can't get over the sound of it, everybody looks (baffles out!)

Too much road salt and low temps atm so just 20 miles.

I really need to get 500 miles on it for 1st service due in 3 weeks:eek:
